It's a tradition that the woman takes the man's name, but if my wife would have refused that I would have token hers. Just to be sure to have the same name.
Yes this seems the best solution, even if at some point I have academic credentials on my old name. I love my dad, but I would have no problem changing my surname, since I'm not that close to the rest of his family.

It's not about ownership but signifying the 'two becoming one flesh' concept.

In that case I'd like to call myself Max Power when I'm married.

Homer: There's three ways to do things - The right way, the wrong way and the Max Power way.
Bart: Isn't that the same as the wrong way?
          Homer: Yes ... but faster!

Right, so how about this as as hypothetical situation: a woman marries and takes her husband's name, then divorces him some years later, keeping the name. Would it be wrong for her to keep this name if she decided to remarry?

Wow, my post appeared but the thread wasn't bumped in the listings. How weird is that?

Probably easier to take her name, than to come up with something different. Especially since anglicising my name might be somewhat difficult.

My idea is that each person should have 2 surnames, a maternal and paternal one, so my name would be Taylor Schnachshnieder Selseth, Shnachshnieder from my mom and Selseth from my dad. My neice would then be called Skylar Schnachshnider Bjorgan. the father gives his paternal name and the mother gives her maternal name.

bad idea, Odin. which name will be passed to the 3rd generation? or do you want family names to grow infinitely long?

Yeah, I wouldn't be that attached to my last name either if it were 'munchkin'.

That's what we do in Spain. Except that the father's name goes first, of course.
