What I'm unsure about (though I'm leaning towards Swiss's views) is whether the possibility of teams declaring us whiners (is it really whining if they backstabbed us on the tech deal?) will cause enough harm to offset any decrease in the other teams' willingness to trade with PAL.

I wouldn't publically oppose PAL until we've established connections with the other two teams on their continent. At the moment, PAL has enough partners on our continent to cancel our OB and still keep full intercontinental trade in all cities. That would hit us for 10cpt, which is a very significant amount at this stage of the game.

I'm not sure what the current tech situation is, but would Priesthood for Monotheism be possible with PAL?Our turnplayer was not in synch with the team consensus when he made that trade. We are working on a way to make it up to you.
Please understand we wish to maintain good relations with you.

I'd also like to ask for a short term loan of either Iron or (preferably) Ivory to train/whip some decent units as compensation.

Hi,
I agree with Swiss Pauli's and m_h's assessment. Maybe we should write as much to them, putting up some pressure? "We're a bit disappointed that you didn't tell us about the mistake, especially since this trade had been initiated by you, didn't hear from you in some time, had relied on the trade for our planning, bla bla", something along that line? Maybe we can squeeze some compensation out of them at least.

how do we know that they initiated the trade? Remember our emails to them were ..
1) can we have an ETA on the trade pls
2) what! you traded for it already!
If we now say that you initiated it, it makes our first email look a little suspect. I think that this is just something we store away and remember ...
'-1 you have proven yourself slightly untrustworthy'
I agree that asking for phants for a set number of turns would as a means of compensation would be a good idea.
Should we start another thread to keep track of our attitude to the various other players (civ-style of course!)?Quote: "All Happiness is the release of internal pressure"

I'll try to come up with some wording tonight covering:
- we're upset and it's set back chances of a trade alliance,
- we expect compensation,
- their eta on CoL,
- their next tech after CoL,
- the Priest/Mono trade (if possible),
- CoL for Aesthetics (if we agree as a team)?
- any more topics to mention?

Keep in mind that whiplash said this earlier:
We then followed that up with two emails, one agreeing in principle to the deal, the second telling PAL that the extra tech to be included was Monotheism. I'm not sure how that doesn't constitute a deal - it's pretty clear what both sides were offering one another. As for Monarchy for Code of Law we require another, cheap, technology thrown into the mix. The first round of trades already gave you guys an extra 40 bottles, this deal gives an extra 100 bottles. We don’t mind 10 or 20 bottle loss, but 140(approx.) is quite a lot.
But at this stage lets agree, we will trade some variation of Monarchy for Code of Laws … We can iron out the details later.

I definitely do not buy PAL's lame excuse that they "made a mistake" on their trade with Imerio. They went for the trade because it would be advantageous to them in the short run, nothing more or less. We should let them know that we're unhappy, but we can't afford to irritate PAL too much right now. As mostly_harmless said, we are limited in what action we can take until we meet the other two teams. Better to maintain an uneasy level of friendship for the moment, and wait until we have more trading options.
EDIT: Just saw Kylearan's post. Huh? Maybe it was a mistake?! In any case, we certainly can afford to be gracious if they're going to be that kind!

In light of which, I'll come up with a more gracious email accepting the deal.
