At the very least, let's send off an email telling them that we discovered Iron Working, and ask for an ETA on discovering Alphabet. (It should be about 4 turns, based on what they told us before.) Throw in the parts about "looking good" for a Monarchy/Code of Laws exchange and a request for Open Borders, plus some nice formalities, and we should be ready to go.

In normal MP you can't actually propose any diplo actions until the other side has accepted your request to open the screen. Is Pitboss different?

In Pitboss you can open diplo screen at any time. That's how we count the number of cities other teams have.

As for proposal, I agree that we shouldn't sound desperate, but we have to say something soon.

Your idea of open borders seems like a positive step for both teams, but before we accept we must make it clear, we are not allowed to enter each others borders … It’s purely a gold making exercise

We have alphabet next turn, and will propose Sailing for writing (followed by Iron Working and Archery for Alphabet).

As for Monarchy for Code of Law we require another, cheap, technology thrown into the mix. The first round of trades already gave you guys an extra 40 bottles, this deal gives an extra 100 bottles. We don’t mind 10 or 20 bottle loss, but 140(approx.) is quite a lot.

But at this stage lets agree, we will trade some variation of Monarchy for Code of Laws … We can iron out the details later.

Looks like we had the wrong idea about who was to research what! As he'll have Alpha next turn, we need to move fairly quickly here.

I can understand why he's proposing to learn the more costly tech: his research speed to date is better than ours, so having us research Monarchy will slow the deal.

With our prechopped Library at Airstrip 1 we'll pick up speed: does anyone have time to run the numbers on turns to Monarchy and CoL?

Finally (or that have been 'first and foremost'?), we need to decide whether we want to do the deal. If we're in favour of a Monarchy-CoL deal then we can email PAL with our ETA on each tech and work out the final details from there.

Aside from tech deal, can we agree to OB asap? I want to see if we can get that oversea trading bonus with PAL cities, even if we do not see them yet. That would increase our tech pace even more.

I have sent PAL an Open Borders request in-game.

Clearly, they seem to be confused over the deal we want to make. Let's send them a quick reply email mentioning that we've offered Open Borders, and outlining what trade we'd like to make. If we're going to research Monarchy (429 beakers) we definitely have to include something else in a trade for Code of Laws (500 beakers). We could offer something along the religious line (like Meditation/114 beakers or Monotheism/171 beakers), since we'll have to research in that direction anyway for Monarchy.

Make it clear that we definitely ARE going for Monarchy next. We desperately need that tech for the additional happiness.

Ok. I think our best path to Monarchy would be:

EDIT: Myst - Poly - Priest - *Mono - Monarchy.

*Trade in Mono from Templars to get max discount on Monarchy.

Trade Monarchy & Poly to PAL for CoL. Wipes out our 111 beaker debt to PAL, and doesn't slow their path to CoL (assuming they still tech more rapidly than we).
