All joking aside, it was a beautiful story post, and I was glad to see it, because I was going to try to write up the recent fighting but I just didnt get around to it. So you saved me the time... your story was probably better than mine could have been anyway... Thanks
My pleasure. I find the real challenge in some of the story posts, especially warfare, is finding appropriate pictures. Movies are a gold mine of available shots (as you can tell from that post) but often you simply get a picture of Russel Crowe, and none of that great battle scene at the start of Gladiator. I searched high and low for that scene where the Roman catapults let loose at the start of that battle.

Also, the picture of the Janissaries standing in the wheat was a bonus - I have gotten some good pics from the Total War Center Forum.

    Glad you liked it.

I am complaining and shouting only IC, I know that a good player must not complain about the course of the game and accept the possibility to lose someway, somehow. I know this is just a game and I am playing it. This is how I imagine the mighty Russia would react as a world power and this is what my Just Catherine would act. If you feel that I am banging the drum or I am frustrated, this means I am playing the diplomacy and role-playing well

None of the aggressors actually made some story why they attack, what they want, neither they stated their vision about the possible and acceptable peace. Some dialog, discussion maybe...
We have had a long standing 'angst' regarding the damnanglais, that is clear from all the stories in the previous months. Personally, I thought England and I were doing a pretty good job of maintaining that angst and public distrust. Look at their story regarding the assassination attempt on Genevieve. I wish I could have done more leading up to the war, but I was not dictating the time line and had some RL pressures - like getting married.

While talking about Diplos and stories, Neandor, you, as the main critique for Russia's intervention in the Mongol-Chinese war and worrying about the lost diplo-spirit, what is your opinion on the Vikings never actually posted a single story post in the whole game?
I agree it would be nice if the Vikings posted more stories. But they don't; they are a quiet people when it comes to words. And that no doubt gets reflected in the votes.

A major world power is crippled in a well planned conspiracy....
There was much less of a conspiracy than you think. I can tell you that not too long ago Neandor was quite worried that the Viking rifles would be targeted at them. Also, we were not planning to go to war, and were convinced at that last minute. Given how much we have lost population and economic wise, I am not sure it was the best idea. Oh well, done now.

But to think that this was a carefully orchestrated conspiracy is not correct. There is much closer co-operation now, but that is borne of necessity in war.

And last, I agree with you, that we all have to accept each others judgment, so please, accept mine.

        • Good to know that a mid lvl civ can stir so much worry in the large guys. Hey little land and poor location, at least i had to pick a fight with someone. I concentrated long long ago in sci to achieve the military advantage i had. An advantage that would allow me to go for someone. I never had and will have the chance to pick points in the voting rounds, so i said well lets make those highly ranked guys work harder for their spots

          • I don't think anyone ever considered the Vikings to be a "mid lvl civ". First in tech and now first in military really counts for a lot. Even before you started building rifles everyone considered you a top civ. Despite your attempts to pretend to be the "little guy" here, this is still an unprompted invasion by two big civs against one big civ. With another very big civ watching your back.

Haha well then maybe next time do not neglect others, try answering your private messages when called upon. As you see the price is steep for not doing so

Solid strategy to go directly for Astronomy. Still that left you weak in other departments as many saw.

              • Something that cannot be denied to the financial Vikings is their awesome tech rate and the credits for the current animation in the game.

                  • I think we all have a lot to say in the aftermath thread once this Diplo-game is finished somewhere in 10 month I guess and it will be revealing and surprising like the finish of Latino-series

                    • as a player stuck in the bottom half of the scoreboard (not complaining), any pain inflicted on civs bigger and stronger than me is music in my ears, especially the top civs. England was top civ for a long time with cities across the world, to see them fall down a few steps is in my opinion the best thing for balance of the game. and even if their large number of cities and their vast riches in resources and huge cities did not make them truly superior to everyone else, over time such an advantage could have developed if left unchecked. England was certainly a lot more powerful than India, and still is even after losing their heartland. In my opinion, when England falls below Mongolia on the scoreboard, THEN I will protest, but if it is ok for Mongolia to be smashed by two super-powers and squeazed into the tundra and kept at the bottom of the scoreboard, I don't see why the same should not be allowed for England.

                      • Keep in mind that I also protested when Russia, China & Japan jumped on Mongolia...

                        • The turn just flipped as I was playing (pressed enter prematurel) but I did not move after this point - was only doing micro stuff by then anyway. So I just bailed out... can't believe all the turns were done!all

Actually with the AP vote Neander is now at peace for 10 turns with all kingdoms (except non-Christian Arabia)

So I might play my turn soon.

The question of whether modern humans and Neanderthals mated when they encountered each other 40,000 years ago is highly controversial.

                            • Time to Vote!
We vote for the happenings of this thread: Story Thread 6

You can vote right here (please read instructions below first)

Voting ENDS April 11th end of the day

                              1. go to the site
                              2. click your civilization name
                              3. fill out the password you once selected in the civ-picker (the original password of your DoE account at Apolyton)
                              4. Vote!

You have to award EXACTLY 20 points in both categories or you can't submit.
You can give comments to every individual civ.

This is what the rules say about voting:

After every month all players are invited to vote on the stories and role playing of all players.
Using a special web application a total of 20 'points' can be assigned, with a max of 5 points per player.

                              The 2 categories:
                              - Story Telling
Story telling is about how a player tells the story of his civilization and how he communicates with other leaders. How he handles his characters, shows the relation between story and in-game actions, explains the behaviour hof his civ, includes graphics and images, is able to entertain it's readers, etc.

A great part of the fun of a diplo game is the creation of an amazing story thread. This contains everything from national epics to diplomacy, newspaper articles to lies, text, screenshots and images. A player gets votes for storytelling for their contribution to the story thread. There are no rules as to what marks out a good contribution - we all have different tastes - what is too much detail for one person, may be exactly what another person values, some people will give more votes to one brilliant piece than to someone who produces lots of mediocre material, someone else will value quantity more. When voting its simple - give people votes if you personally enjoy their contributions.

                              - Role Playing
Role Playing is about how the in-game actions and the tone of his messages reflect the role of the player. Is the fascist dictator really playing as a fascist? Does it make sence that the fanatic orthodox jewish leader has an alliance with the fanatic orthodox buddhist leader? Is the peaceful friendly leader really friendly and peaceful to his neighbours? In short: do the actions of a player compare to the story role he assigned to himself.

The definition of a diplo game is "A Diplomacy Game is a game in which all players lead their civilization as if they're leading a real nation". Under 'role-playing' people are given votes for the degree to which they do this. Is there a consistency and belieability about the actions of that civ - its in-game actions, its diplomacy, what it says about itself. What nature a civ has is up to the player to decide and to evolve as the game progresses - but they get votes for the believability and consistency of this, and the interest it gives to the game. If you act as if you are 'playing a game', you won't get many votes; but if you can give the rest of us the impression your nation actually exists, you deserve to get lots.
                              -----------

Per month all points a player receives in both categories will be calculated.
Based on this a score list will be created per category.
The #1 on that score list will receive X scorepoints. (X = the number of civs in the game). The #2 will receive X-1, etc.

The rest of the score-explanation only uses examples to get the point through, but is too much to place here. Read it in the first post of this thread.
This all comes down to the following:

Based on the scorepoints everybody received in a month, a ranking can be made for that month, per category.
                              The #1 on that ranking receives 18 gamepoints, the #2 17 gamepoints, the #3 16 gamepoints, ..... the #18 gets 1 gamepoint.
The sum of all gamepoints for both categories for all months determines the winner.

                              Good luck!
