When many people grow up they put childish things (such as games) behind them. I'm afraid all of us are confessing to more than a little childishness just by routinely surfing this website.

Unit promotions are stupid since the AI caan't use them. It also introduces a lot of micromanagement for little benefit. Same for great people. Corruption, whatever, I'm sure if you cared you could edit this in Civ 3. Governments in Civ 4 are nice, but this is a pretty minor feature that doesn't justify a sequel.

No, no. I am the one who prefers the cartoons over rugged, attractive looks. Well, maybe not the only one. As someone whose children have pronounced as having never grown up, I welcome little cartoons on my PC. I don't welcome it when the other little cartoon units beat up on my cartoon units, but I have answers for that!

On Topic: Even as a loving, loyal fan, I find the long patch time a matter of concern. I have Bhruic's unofficial patch and love the work done, so I am not unhappy, just concerned. Still, for a loving, loyal fan, that's a big move, one that shouldn't happen.

Cottages, workshops and the resource specfific improvements.

            Better AI.

              Two plausible models for economy:

              The cottage economy

              and

              The specialist economy

In civ 3 you just mined the hills and irrigated the grasslands.

More micromanagement, and not very creative. They really should move beyond the tile-based system in favor of something less gamey.

The AI's not much better either especially before BTS. The diplomacy is still non existent. And how is the settler/worker improvement worthy of a $50 sequel.

The games are so similar, only hardcore nerds who mastered the ins and outs of Civ 3 could possibly call these minute improvements worth $50.

Let's see... Civ 3, a non functioning Live MP version.
Civ 4... a great live MP version.

That alone is worth the money.

And as far as the differences between the games... anybody that can't see the significant differences has obviously not played either game much.

The AI uses unit promos fine, and it introduces a more flexible way to play war.

You can not like Civ4 all you want, but it's dramatically different from Civ3 in many important ways, please don't imply it has much similarity to Civ3...

It's kind of sad that 3.13 ended up adding a new bug for every 3-4 things that it fixed. If that never happened then we might have not even needed another patch.

The problem is the AI doesn't pay for promotions. How is that fine? It often selects inappropriate ones as well.

Multiplayer, I'm sure Civ 4 is better since Civ 3 had none for a while.

Uhhhh... what are you talking about. Nobody pays for promotions. If you mean upgrades, and not promotions, you are still not correct, because while they pay less for upgrades (depending on the level) than humans, they still have to pay for them.

Yeah, and so do humans... your point?

Civ 3 never had a functioning live MP version worth playing.

Personnally, I hate civ 3 and love civ 4.
You also totally forgot the fact that you can mod almost everything in civ4. I play on my own map script, and Fall from Heaven II in Civ4 couldn't have done in Civ 3 for instance.

I hate to admit that I've started giving my mobile units more flanking promotions after watching the AI kick my ass sometimes with it. So I know the AI may not always do the right promotion but it get it right more often then you probably think.

And for example, you see a lot of AI gunpowder units with shock when there aren't any melee left to fight but the only reason for that is they're old upgraded units that had it before. If I paid as little for upgrading as the AI, I'd have a lot of units that looked weird promotion wise also. I spend my money on the units that work best since I can rarely afford to upgrade all at one time.
