I don't think there's an FX5500 with 256MB of RAM.
There is one.

I am not a tech guy. Any chance I have this screwed up and my new Graphics card is my problem?
I think it is something else. What other programs are running when you play the game? How long have you had the current operating system on the computer? How many programs have you installed and uninstalled in that time? How careful are you about web browsing (it could be spyware/malware/etc slowing things down)?
Oh, and if you are playing on a large map then that's probably the issue. I don't think your system could handle it smoothly (mine can't and I have a better processor, though a worse graphics card--5200 with 128MB). The game uses up an insane amount of memory for large maps. I had about a GIG of virtual memory being used, along with 500+ megs of ram. All by the game.
When I get a new system in a few months I'm thinking about getting two gigs of memory on it, since it looks more and more like 1 gig is going to be the standard/minimum for decent play for games.

I still don't see that they have actually fixed the memory leak.
I use 3.2 gig p4 processor with 128 mb ram geforce 5750 pci express vid card and 1.5 gigs of ram and still it crawls on huge maps.
I don't get crashes to desktop anymore, but that only happened a couple of times.
Is anyone else's comp with 'higher than recommended specs' still leaking?

Thank you Firaxis thus far the patch has seemed to fix every major gameplay bug I have encountered prior... Again thank you Firaxis for a timely patch(a month from launch not to bad in comparison to some games I have played)...
Hmmm. Last sunday I sat down and went through all the dds files in the art directory, resizing them all. In most cases, I cut the resolution in half, in others, to a quarter. All leaderhead textures I cut to 512, and removed all mipmaps.
The result?
Diplomacy screens appear instantly now, and to be honest if I didn't know there WOULD be a difference in quality, I doubt I would have noticed it.
I can now zoom out to the planet view with no delay.
Now the kicker :
Memory consumption has been dramatically reduced.
I wonder if textures are not being reused? I mean, for each tile, perhaps a new copy of the requisite texture is being loaded into ram?

Isn't part of the patch an option to play with low-res textures?
Yeah, I am not sure what that does. I'll have to reinstall the whole game to find out, I think. I installed the blue marble mod and the "low res textures" option doesn't seem to do anything.

Nice update. Haven't really explored it that much, just wanted to see if the two breads resource giltch had gone, which it has. Great to finally be able to see how much each square makes now. Also you can now see how much each city makes in research and commerce in the City screen.
The intro movie seems worse though, they've fixed the sound problem, but not the video stutters. So I gues that's a performance issue. And the International Date Line bug is still there. Perhaps in will be fixed in a later patch.
The horse strategic resource should not be visible until horseback riding is discovered, even though they are above ground, since their utility is not yet known.
You can apply that logic to wheat, rice, sheep, pigs, cattle etc. It seems illogical to make horses invisible when all other surface resources and some subterranean ones like gold, gems and silver are visible from the start.

Some copper mines could be really close to the surface of the ground, and IIRC some might exist in elemental form. I have not heard of iron and uranium being in elemental form or near surface of the ground.
I think there are other sources but bog iron (limonite) is one that was available in the UK.
Great news. Gonna try the patch first thing when I get home tonight.
Just a question, can't wait to find out. :-P
Has anyone who had the skipping sound problem in the movies before tested the patch? If so, are the movies working now? I've had the game since release but haven't been able to see intro movie yet. =( Wonder movies also have the skipping sound. Holding my fingers crossed for tonight!!
Downloaded the patch. Started a new game -- large with 6 civs --- a little slow, but then I was only playing small maps and that!
Opening movie played okay, but now the video seems faster. But it played the music and jerked a little through the video. I don't really care, as I usually do the Esc key out of it anyway.
Went back to single units, and reset audio to stereo, from the 'mono' setting, just trying things, as I don't think 'mono' audio was there before. Perhaps that will make it faster as it set it as the Default.
Played the game a while after the opening movie of Lenord Nimoy stuttered sometimes, perhaps while the map was being made, a few stutters there with everything (audio and video). The video seem to have to catch up at the end to get it to where the sound was, or else I may need to look at it again, but I think it went through a few frames at the end of the map making around there -- really seemingly fast.
Played the game with 6 Civs and a large map for awhile, and I never had any crashes before, and do not now either.
Sometimes the games lagged on moving the Scout or a Warrior but reissue the order then it will take, just sometimes I think the AI is moving also!
Not fast though, but not slow really, since I never played a large map that far before, since I think the game is faster now -- for the most part.
Quite a large area of Custom_Continents uncovered so the game must be playing faster.
So except some stuttering with even the Main Menu Song (a few glitches I might say) and with the Opening movie of the game with Lenord Nimoy, but the game after that and with the main game started played okay, did not really slow down that much, but I have not met another Civ, or anything except uncovered quite a bit of the map, while going through some Techs and moving the Scout and Warrior around like I said!
So played the game with the Default Settings on High Detail throughout, and Single Units, and the game must be playing better. I have not built a Wonder, so I do not know about those yet, but those also were okay for the most part!
I do have full acceleration on my Live! card enabled otherwise, I defrag the Logical Partition before playing, and have my graphics card (FX5200 Geforce) set to High Performance, like normal, for other games and such, and all of that, so I think the game is for the most part playing faster. I have not tried Low Textures or anything out of the Normal Settings the game was using before (High on everything and 1024 x 768 mode with Antialiasing on Zero) so until I get further into the game, that is all I can say!
Installed the Xfire part for multiplayer, but I doubt if I will use it, but that is part of the Patch Installation, but a separate part, and I do not know about GameSpy or what was used before, because Xfire is new with the patch!
Did not clear out the Cache either just left everything like it was, and just started a new game after the patch was installed.
Well, works okay so far, and may slow down later in the game.
Using whatever it was main memory (perhaps only 229mB or so) and up to around 768mB Virtual Memory, but only looked after quitting the game!
Played the game Full Screen, so until later, everything is for the most part -- okay, the rest is been listed up above.
Surely has to be quicker now, with my 1.8gHz Celeron and 512mB of main memory with Windows 2K Professional with the rest listed above!
Just may change some setttings like Detail and such lower perhaps, but will have to try and see what the game does first, with a large Custom_Continent map with one for each of 6 Civs altogether!
Regarding the skipping sound in the movies - I don't think it's actually an issue with the sound, but with the movie playback as a whole. I think the reason the sound skips is because the sound is actually playing back fine, but the video is playing too slowly, so the sound is actually getting ahead of the video. At least that's what it's like when I play.
Haven't tried out the patch yet though, will check it out tonight.
