If I try to reset these it tell me to restart the game before the changes take effect - and when I do so it resets them and tells me once more that I can't run the game.

In other words the performance is the same, but now I am forced to use crappy low-texture graphics.

I have onboard graphics (P4 3.02GHz, 512MB RAM) and yes late-games get a bit choppy but I am a patient kind of guy. How can I disable this 'helpful new feature'?
There is a fix for this . You will have to find it on the patch thread at the CivFanatics forum (now 15 pages long) as it has been mentioned but I can't remenber which page. No doubt someone will post the relevant info here as well, otherwise happy reading!

you're right but when you start you dont have any improvements in your cities or your terrain (and fewer units of course)

as time passes objects just keep piling up on the map....

        Thanks.

Seems like a useless feature to me. There's only one way to see if the game will work on one's system. Only a complete coward would rely on the word of a little pop-up box - which gets it wrong anyway.

        • Geez. To install or not to install? Roll the dice or flip a coin? This thread is not encouraging. Has anyone created a system restore point before installing the patch? Then after installation, if things are not better or even worse, returned to the restore point with no problems?

          • Just wanted to post that the patch rocks so far. I really notice the speed improvement in all phases of the game. Note that I had no troubles running the game out of the box for those wondering.

            Specs:
            2.8 ghz P4
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro with drivers from March 05 - Catalyst 5.3 (the latest drivers have lots of video glitches for me so I went back to my old one)
            1 gig RAM
            1.5 gig swap file

            • Played the patched game today. Prepatch, I couldn't get longer than into the game and play 1-2 turns before the game crashed on me, and I couldn't load saves without the game crashing on me.

When the game was properly patched, I tried starting a new game with continents and standard map size. The intro movie started. Spook spoke his usual speach, but as prepatch, the movie didn't follow properly. When the game was finally showed as finished loading, he just continued speaking with some lagging in the sound. No start button anywhere to be seen. Then my screen went totally black and the sound disappeared. This has happened prepatch too, the only solution is to force-reboot the computer.

So I did, and since I suspected the reason for the problem was memory, I tried to start a game on a small map. I used windowed mode, to follow the memory usage through FreeRAM XP. When I have no programs running, I use to have 50-60% free memory on my 512 MB machine. So I had this time too. When I loaded up the game, it used very litte memory. Then I loaded up the new small map game, and soon I had 5% RAM left, but the game started properly, although using somewhat long time to load. Well into the game everything went smooth, but I still only had 5-8% memory available. Then I tried to use FreeRAM XP and see what happened. It initiated freeing of RAM and when it was finished, I had nearly 40 % free RAM! That number was what I kept having throughout the session.

Conclusion: Something is very, very wrong with the memory, it's leaking big time when starting games... But thankfully not after that it seems. The only thing I have left to check now, is if my saves can be loaded or not, but that will have to wait until tomorrow I think.

                • Read thro' this thread & related one at CivFanatic. Downloaded patch direct from site rather than try update game. Ran patch. Got CRC error message, chose to ignore & patch cont to install. Said no to XFire & patch completed. Was using SD4hide & this still works. Game opens, intro movie etc all fine. Loaded previously saved game ran fine, had minor graphical glitch in Wonder movies, this has now gone. Sound played fine. I had previously set detail to medium & this had been reset to high by patch so check your options. Only played SP but everything seems fine so far. Will be trying larger maps etc later as this is where I had trouble, but have to do the housework & meal first, seems rest of family can't accept they need civilizing!

                  • I'm getting a "Load Error. Can not load version 100, expected version 101" when trying to load an old save.
Anybody had this and solved it?

                    New game seems OK thou.

                    • Yeah, they updated the save format. I don't know why, though I have not had an in depth look at it yet.

I have seen reports of old saves working, but only 4000BC Autosaves

                      • I've loaded prior saves fine.

How do I regenerate the map in the worldbuilder?

                        • My save (about 100 AD) is working fine with the 109 patch, although I've never had a problem with the software. My first impression is that everything runs a little faster than it did before.

A friend of mine got that. What happened was this: He had installed on C:\. Then he decided to copy the folder to E:\ since he was soon going to format C:\ and didn't want to reinstall. He loaded the copied folder. That worked fine, but the updater only updated the folder installed, not the copy, even though he started up from the copied place. He got the problem then, since he tried loading a save from me in the unupdated game(which he thought was updated because of above reasons), which was from the new patch. That's the only time I've seen that problem.

                            • hmm, playing in Multiplayer PBEM, it seems I have received a save file from a player whom has downloaded patch whereas I have not. I am reluctant to do so instantly in case patch has more bugs but at moment, game will not allow me to play my turn due to incorrect version.

I believe there is a setting in the .ini file to disable hardware checking.
