Hmm, I didn't really notice any speed increases. I did, however, note a major speed decrease when I loaded a second game (ie, started off by loading a game, then immediately loaded a different one). It got massively bogged down, and I ended up killing it after waiting about 5 minutes for it to load.
Haven't experienced any CTDs, but I wasn't getting them before either.
Wow, this is a fiasco. Firaxis must be so embarassed, and, hopefully, ashamed...

I installed the patch and it fixed the stuttering movie sounds for me. I also noticed that the game seemed smoother (and this was using the patch on a saved game using a mod). I definitely DO NOT like the new Foreign Advisor screen. It looks very cheap. They also didn't fix the Randomize Leader Personality trait. Grrrr. I like having the leaders have different configurations from game to game.

That's not a bug, it randomises their behaviour not their threats.

Is this some kind of twisted Joke I emailed Take2 asking about the patch and got an email back this morning saying they had no idea when the patch would be released. I then check before I leave work and voila the patch is released. I get home and try to update and it says "no patch available". I then come here and see the mess. I went to the official Civ4 web site and there is no mention of the patch being released. It seems hard to believe that they sent the patch to QA 1 week ago and that they even tested it at all. If they had to pull it within an hour of it being put out for release then they could not of tested it very hard. What is their test script. "Ok the game starts, release the patch?" You would think that with this kind of a cluster **** that Firaxis would put SOMETHING on their webpage, even just an apology that they screwed up releasing thier patch.
FWIW, this type of thing is not just limmited to games. I installed a patch to our hospital system today and guess what, after wasting half my day I find out it doesn't work either. You would think that for a system that deals with patient care they would do better testing but it seems they share a QA dept with Firaxis/Take2.
What a grand day Where is a nice low tech book......

This just further supports my belief that the patch was released by accident. Someone inadvertently hit the big red button, so to speak. Hence why there was no patch release announcement on their website, and why it was pulled so quickly (there's no way they would have pulled it so fast if it was in response to complaints from the consumers).

This is why our company's IT department sets policies on our Windows workstations so users have restricted privileges. Want to update a production software? It's going to go through a full packaging/certification/internal QA process. You'd be shocked at how poor commercial grade software installs are... That's why it's policy to capture and repackage; we often have to clean up a load of crap out of the capture so it doesn't overwrite system registry keys and files.
That, plus our standardized Windows XP image on standardized hardware, works wonders.
I can say with certainty that if the US gets in a war with China I do so hope that the War Dept. will not be using them for technical assistance.
Firaxis: "Well, we have detected a slight glitch that has unfortunately allowed 2 million screaming Chinese to land unopposed in San Bernadino."
Firaxis: "However, it cannot be expected that our software could have determined this in advance, as the Chinese were using transports that do not conform to usual specifications".
"It is not possible that all configurations be tested in advance. That would be impractical and cost prohibitibive".
"However, we have updated our software and are preparing to release a patch that will solve our recognition problem."
We do have some final Q&A isssues with the upgrade that we need to resolve before we release it. Our lastest version is showing 3 million Chinese roaming free and deadly in Newark. We are not concerned. Certainly, this is just another glitch"
"None of these minor issues should reflect badly on our product in any way, after all, we are currently tracking the location of all Girl Scout formations and are confident that not a cookie will get past our screeners."
