  • I've had a problem that I haven't seen anyone mention, at least not in THIS way.
I have a Radeon 9550 AGP Graphics card that prevented me from running the game until I performed the "fix" on the official Civ 4 site wich required me to download and install that "PK" fix that moved the ART file from the Assets main file. That worked fine.
However, I noticed that I have no options listed in the main menu for running the wonder movies (I believe there is supposed to be), and every time I build a wonder, the computer informs me it was built, but it does'nt SHOW the movie for it being built, and I never disabled them, so I can only assume this is some kind of graphics bug for some ATI graphics cards.

Anyone else have this problem too?

    • I have the mislabled disc 2. Problem is that Disc 1 is giving me the same error. Disc 1 does bring up a menu with play as an option, but then when I hit play, it gives me the same error as if I had no disc in at all.

      • No mention ANYWHERE of what railroad does. I can only imagine that the only benefit is the 10:1 rather than 2:1 speed bonus.

I was racing another Civ for a city spot. I got my settler where I wanted, and they got their's there on the following turn. I hit B to build on my next turn, and it instantly created the opponent's city instead. The city was clearly not there when I started my turn.

Oh yes, and I have disc 1 as the "install" CD and disc 2 being the "play" CD, but for some reason the game will only start if I have disc 1 in.

        • I can't enter the city details window when i am far zoomed out (to the point where you only see city titles on the map). I double click on the city and it flashes the city screen for a split-second, but then immediately switches back to the top down view. It seems like a general program bug rather than being specific to my computer.

EDIT: strange, now it works. i guess restarting the program worked...

I had your screenshot where little or nothing would show up and when my leader came on the screen all I saw was teeth and eyes-kinda freaky. That machine was using an ATI card with 64megs. Bummed I came home from my office and loaded it on our new computer using x64 and a Radeon x800 with 128MB and it loaded and played without a hitch. Just to see if it was ATI I loaded it on my laptop (2.8ghz with 1GB memory and 64MB video) with an ATI card. It showed all the details but was slow-very slow. While ATI is usually a solid platform, I think there may be something in how CIV 4 uses graphics that causes the card to choke.

I had the same problem. Disk 1 and 2 are mislabled. Mine gave the error you mentioned. Here is how I fixed it. Reinstall the game. When you put disk 2 in see if a dialogue box comes up that is not the Civ 4 install dialogue box. Sometimes DVD drives on XP will have a dialogue box come up asking you how you want that disk to be read. If you get the XP dialogue box cancel it before answering the Civ 4 dialogue box. Don't let it run in the background because it will interfere with the installation. Once it is gone it should load fine. There is a bar on the Civ 4 dialogue box showing how much is left to install and under it is a list of files being loaded onto the computer. The bar should make all the way to the end or near it before it closes the dialogue box. You will know it did a proper loading of your game if you see the Civ 4 desktop icon on your desktop. That is the last thing that is done in a proper loading. I have loaded the game on 4 computers and I had that phenomenon on three of them.

              • Got another HARD crash - quick blue screen reboot. I had just clicked on the pasture command, and that was it...

The game engine is like a drunk on an icy road - you watch it just waiting for it to go down...

                • Coal as a Resource

                  Hi all -
I'm needing to build rail roads. But having free access to all the nations I do *not* see coal anywhere. I have uranium and oil, but no coal. Anybody else see this problem? It's not that the others are hiding it from me, I've been roaming the entire world with explorers.
I'm playing with huge world and big continets.

I also have the mislabled CD, as well as the French (I think) map.

                  • The music in some of my wonder movies, run choppy. Yesterday I had 3 crashs to desktop.
One I just build 2 cities on the same turn. Don't remember what the other 2 were now. I know they were about 15 min apart.
                    No crashes today.

                      • Someone in this (or some other bug thread?) was saying that Civ 4 didn't run on laptops. A buddy of mine put it on his Fujitsu Lifebook and it hard crashed until he upgraded to the latest drivers. Now it works beautifully.

So it works on at least one laptop. I've had no problems with any machines.

                        • CivilizationIV.ini - Mod folder and Modless saves

Problem: If you have a saved game from a 'modless' run of Civ4, and have the Mod property in the ini file set to something, you can't load the game.

                          Steps to reproduce:
                          1. Start Civ4 without any mods.
                          2. Start and save a game.
                          3. Quit the program.
                          4. Edit the CivilizationIV.ini file: set Mod = to some mod instead of 0.
                          5. Start Civ4. The mod will be loaded up.
                          6. Try to load the modless save game.
                          7. Problem: you get a notification that civ4 needs to restart to unload the mod, but when it restarts, it loads the mod from ini file again, and then gives an error about not being able to load the save game due to the mod being loaded.

The negative is not for open borders, but for your borders being close to each others.
In the german version it IS a bug, because it says "unsere geschlossenen grenzen" (our closed borders).
They need to fix the translation.

                            • Here's my list of bugs

-Crashes in Multiplayer Lobby during prime time hours.
-Unable to scroll through list of games as it does not allow mouse wheel or side bar to be able to move up and down. IE You scroll through web pages using the side bar or mouse wheel, in the Lobby you are able to do this with the Buddy List or Chat window but unable for the Games Listing Window.
-If you leave a game for any reason on Multiplayer Games you are kicked completely out of the Lobby.
-Logging onto Multiplayer Lobby is a hassle, It doesn't save your name, doesn't give you a list of names, doesn't have an option to save password ect ect.
-Most Games in the Multiplayer Lobby are Password Protected, having no way to filter these out completely is not convenient.
-Most Games have already been started for hours, unable to tell if there is a new game or staging for a new game, unable to tell the time by which a game has started, unable to tell if you picked an already eliminated Civ upon entering a new game.
-Different Names show up in the New Game box where you specify the title of your Multiplayer Game.
-Lags During Zoming out to world map.
-Lags going into Advisor screens, causing crashes or freezes sometimes.
-Lags for no reason sometimes during long games, Alt-tab out and re-enter some how makes the problem go away for a while.
-Unable to choose not to found a Religion if you research the tech first.
-Stuttering/Choppy Opening Movie and Sound simultaneously.
-Stuttering/Choppy Wonder Movies and Sound completely incoherent due to stuttering.
                              -Wonder Movies sometimes cause crashes.
-Units becoming completely Invisible at times.
-Units sometimes board boats and end up being deposited on an Island far from the mainland, only to discover he actually isn't on the boat, but his Icon on the boat is there, but he is unable to unboard because he is on the mainland.
-Music is rarely played at times.
-Music isn't played at a certain zoom.
-Music fades in and out when zooming, sometimes unable to hear it at all.
-Different Music is played zooming close to cities even if you Specified a different Music (like the opening one) under the options Custom Music Folder.
                              -Music sometimes plays during Diplomacy.
-Lags during Diplomacy, sometimes slight stuttering of the sound, sometimes crashing games or freezing.
-Game gets extremely bogged down late game with alot of the map settled, this gets worse the bigger your map setting is or by choosing any neat Graphic options.
-Extreme Lag playing Scenario Earth1000AD. Upwards of 10 second mouse scrolling intervals.
-Systems far beyond System Specs fully upgraded with latest drivers having extreme problems.
-Mislabeled Disk 2 as Play disk when is it Disk 1 that is the Play disk.
-Difficult to Queue up Multiple Buildings when there is more than two rows of Icons, holding the shift key down and scrolling down to select a Building from the third row will result in an automatic scroll back to the first two rows. Say if you want to get Bank, Market and Grocer from the third row using the Shift, You will be unable to pick all three because it will pop up to the first 2 rows making you have to continously scroll down to queue something from the last rows.
-Sometimes workers or units that have not moved per turn will not show up during the Unit Cycling process. Making you press the W key always before ending a turn to see if it missed units.
-Sometimes Queues for Cities end and do not give you the Detailed City Info screen to select something new. You will sometimes come across a city of yours that has no production because of the missed Detailed City Info screen.
-Selecting Things in the City view is difficult because they are all Icon based, forcing you to leave your mouse over an icon for awhile until it tells you what the icon is, there can be 6+ rows you have to scroll through sometimes, making it difficult at times,
-The Queue Selecting box you scroll up and down from is too small only allowing 2 rows to be seen at a time when there is 3 to 4 times that number.
-The Automatic City Production Cycle Menu after each turn, is Icon based and caused too much scrolling, maybe allow Military, Wonder, Building filter button at the top to make it more manageable.
-Advisor Pop-ups can be annoying by Advising unrelated items like Wonders for brand new settlements ect.
-Science Map does not have arrows points from all techs that lead to the new tech. You are unable to see what techs you need unless you select the tech and it barely highlights the previous techs with a barely lighter green. Make it a different color or make sure that the color is really noticable.
-Some Techs require Two techs first and/or a Third technology to advance. There doesn't seem to be a way to determine it from the Science Advisor screen, you have to right click on each individual technology to see what its requirments are.
-The Encyclopedia incorrectly states that Lumbermills will get a +1 Gold bonus next to a river. I tried this and it did not increase the commerce beyond the original +1 gold.
-Accidently assigning a worker outside of the Big Cross City Radius in the City Window will result in being booted out of the City Window.
-Changing the .INI file to Windowed Mode resulted in being unable to scroll with the mouse. Tried setting Allow Scroll In Windowed Mode to both 0 and 1 neither worked.
-Not sure if this is a bug or not but Memory allocation order in the .INI file shows up as being = -1 while (the rest of the .INI is 0's and 1's)
-ThemeParseLog in Civilization 4 folder is showing this reoccuring error
                              "Error : File - ('Civ4Theme_Custom.thm', Ln:4910, Col:47) Could not load bitmap 'Civ4/HUD/city_titlearrows.tga'"

Hey, that's not a bug! That's my way of leaving the city window!
I don't like the escape or enter key, as I play this thing as much with the mouse as possible and I couldn't find another way to exit with the mouse only.
