  • May be working as designed, but when at war, its possible for you to base planes in port cities in an open-borders country and lose them if the enemy moves in a fleet. I can just about cope with losing air units to an army in a 'neutral' country, but overrunning airfields with fleets feels broken.

I haven't yet been able to test fleet vs fleet or landing air units in a city occupied by a fleet yet to see if similar oddness occurs.
To doubt everything or to believe everything are two equally convenient solutions; both dispense with the necessity of reflection.

    • I am not sure if this has been reported before.

Civ 4 crashed my system frequently, like every other turn. Mind you, they weren't the "exit to desktop" kind of crashes, they were the "freeze system solid" crashes that require the use of the hardware reset button. Strangely, the tutorial worked perfectly well.

Initially I thought I had the resolution set too high. Moving it down to 1024x768 didn't help.

Updating the system drivers help a bit, so that running the game in 1024x768 now works fine most of the time. That is, if I manage to get pass the first couple of turns it would keep working for a few hours - I haven't played more than a few hours at a stretch

However, bumping the resolution up to 1240x1028 still freezes the system solid.

      My rig:

      AMD64 3200+
      MSI mobo
      nVidia FX 5500 with 128MB
      Windows XP with SP1 applied
      1GB RAM (dual channel)

      • Zoomed-out main map graphics become corrupted after diplomatic negotiations (civ leader videos). There are lots of horizontal lines with few visible terrain tiles here and there. Zoomed-in map graphics are ok. Changing screen resolution from game options seems to temporarily remedy the problem, but new diplo negotiations again break zoomed-out map.

Civ4 copy is UK distribution (one DVD, purchased from play.com). I installed Civ4 for 1 admin user (not for "all users" when asked by installer).

        System details:
        Pentium4 3.2GHz
        1 Gig memory
        ASUS P4P800 motherboard
Nvidia 6800GT (256Meg) display adapter with 81.85 drivers (official latest, WHQL certified)
Directx 9.0c, with the additional .dll installed by Civ4
SB Audigy2 audio card with latest drivers
Windows XP SP2 (UK English) with latest updates (via automatic Windows update)

        • Civ4 locks up and crashes every hour to 30 minutes (more often later in the game). I've knocked it down to lowest graphic settings and resolution and it now crashes to desktop rather than BIOS but it's still very annoying.

anyway, think I found a bug. I had open borders with Alexander and had trade routes in my cities to his cities. Then I see on the top left message board that Alexander has adopted mercantilism. But I still have trade routes to his cities...

                  • Hi all... I hardly ever post because I usually see the results and yall answer my questions... but I am not sure that this one has been answered. I have met all the requirements of the game that are posted have the direct X installed, got the plugin for the geforce 3 card and still whenever I play, the movie parts seem to be stalling my pc and at times totally crash the game. Hope you can solve. The movies are one of my favorite parts of the game! partyRick

                    • GeForce 3 is probably too weak to handle the game.

                      • Map generation bugs

Hi! I've been playing the game since 1991 and buying it since Civ2. Civ4 is really the best civ ever!

Below are the bugs that annoys me the most.

                        Bug 1:

The custom game way of starting a game doesn't seem to use all the entered data. I restarted about 20 times with rocky and snaky continents and started mostly on small islands without many mountains. When chosing the same settings from the Play Now! menu I get the expected results.

                        Bug 2:

I've gotten EXACTLY the same map twice when using the same settings (lakes, rocky, high sealevel). The identical maps were generated on different days and with other map generations in between. Seems like somehing is fishy with the randomization seeds..

                        Feature/bug 3:

ALL the chosen Play Now and Custom Game settings should be saved between the games, so you don't have to do any manual choices every time you restart many to generate a new map. (I usually restart about 5-20 times before I get a nice starting position. Normally want to have close contact with a cuople of civs and a strategically challenging position.)

This may not be exactly what you're looking for, but once you choose the settings you want, try changing the QuickStart flag in the CivilizationIV.ini file to 1...

OK, I think I figured it out: when you research a new civic and get prompted to change to it, and you select "Let me see the big picture," that's when you don't see any change in upkeep cost.

please make it so those transports stay fortified after I load a unit into them. This is a real pain.

                              • I noticed that the people reporting serious crashes seemed all to be using nVidia cards. I had the same problem with the newest nVidia drivers (81.85 and 81.87 beta) until I went back to 78.01. Since then I've only gotten a few crashes to desktop, but none of the major problems I had earlier.
nVidia came out with 81.94 the other day, but I for sure won't be installing any new driver versions anytime soon.
If you want to give 78.01 a try, you can get it from http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_78.01.html
