  • That's the giveaway that proves he hasn't played the game at all.

Off the subject, and on to a different one. Have any of you found or read anything about this? I'm thinking these have some in-game meaning:

    Spoiler:
In my explorations so far, I've come across two towers that look like cell phone towers. Each of these has a transformer at the base of the tower, and when the switch on the transformer is activated, I get a notice that a new radio signal has been discovered. The first told me that radio signal Oscar Tango had been found, while the second was Sierra Victor. In the military phonetic alphabet those would be OT and SV, and that's how they show up in the radio menu on the PIPBoy. Listening to the signal from each, it's Morse code. Now, I've long forgotten every bit of Morse I know (except for YYZ, but that's another story), but it's a short repeating signal, I assume OTOTOTOT... for the first and SVSVSVSV... for the second.

My current hypothesis is that there are several of these towers scattered around the wasteland, and activating them all will give some message, but I don't know for sure. Do any of you know anything about these?

          • Well, wow. They have some good quests this time around. I have been working on one for quite a while now, and it's really good. That's the Family Ties quest, the one you originally get from the West girl in Megaton. Here's what I like about it.

            Spoiler:
It seems to start off as a simple deliver this item to that place quest. So I get to the town of Aretu, get to hear they're terrorized by some gang (and the writing is not cringeworthy), I go look for the gang. I find them but even that part is interesting, they're hiding in a metro station that is full of traps. Made me jump a few times. Then I find out that these guys are genetically mutated vampires and kill people to drink their blood. That raises moral ambiguity. When I first saw indications that they kill people and drink their blood, I was inclined to slaughter them all on my way out, then I learned it's a genetic mutation. Now I'm trying to negotiate for townspeople to deliver blood bags to these folks in exchange for protection.

The writing and moral ambiguity are good, and I also saw there are several ways to do this quest. Also, it seems that you can still do much of that if you stumble onto the vampire gang before talking to Lucy West and getting the quest from her. Good stuff.

Yeah, gotta love those I actually stopped paying attention to any user reviews a long time ago. Even the ones that aren't biased knee-jerk "it's the best one ever" or "it sucks" reactions are rarely well-written. Any any average scores from user votes are usually horribly distorted by the 10s and 1s that get thrown around.

                  • Man, this game is so claustrophobic that I've spent 20 hours exploring without touching the main quest, and I haven't even seen half the map yet.

It's taken me a while, but I finally got to the point where stealth is deadly. The Sneak skill is nice, but it's harder to use in this game than it was in Oblivion. Having reached level 13, I now have the Silent Running perk so I'm not penalized for trying to sneak while moving fast. I also have the Commando and Sniper perks, a Sneak skill of 95 and a Small Guns of 100. I went up to the Germantown Police HQ last night, and I was a super-mutant ambushing machine. I'd hide near a corner and wait for a patrol to get close, then slide out, go into VATS, and target the head with 3 bursts. Between the skills and perks, I'd usually have 90-95% chance of hitting the head, and that would usually take out the mutant in one or perhaps two bursts.

I've seen so many weapons in this game it's unreal, and I'm carrying a horde of them too. Some I don't use, and some are situational. I have found this weapon called a Fat Man. Basically, it's a shoulder mounted slingshot (think PIAT, if you know what that was) that launches a shell called a Mini-Nuke. Given that it does 650 or so damage with an explosive skill of 35, it's a pretty potent round (I've only found two thus far). The rarity of the ammo means I don't generally carry it, though I will pull it out for the next Super Mutant Behemoth I run across.

I have a suit of power armor, but cannot wear it. I think I'll have to go track down the Brotherhood of Steel soon. I know where they are, because I heard it on the radio.

Me too, unfortunately I didn't find Fat Man until after taking out that super mutant, could have been really useful (and I've got 7 mini nukes for it). I still haven't tried it

I know where they are, but they're telling me that a certain person needs to aprove me wearing it, but that person is impossible to find. Guess I'll have to do some more searching (I know where he's "suppsed" to be, but he's not there)

So far I'm having fun with the game, more fun than most games played lately. there's a few minor annoyances in the game, but nothing big. What I hate most of all is that I can't set mouse controls
The game is well worth the money. I liked the first two Fallout games, this game has improved on what I didn't like about the first two Fallout games (though I would like to have a the same view as in earlier Fallout games, I can live with it being first person)

                      • Honestly, I prefer the first person viewpoint. I find it far more immersive than any form of third person view. There are few games I prefer to play in third person, and so far I've only found two groups of those: the Hitman games and the various Jedi games. The only reason I play Hitman in third person is that the first person viewpoint in them sucks. Third person works better for a lightsaber wielder, though. Awareness of what is going on all around you is critical.

And my character has a high Science skill and the Entomologist trait. That actually gave me extra dialogue options to hold a more intelligent conversation with the guy, that's a very good thing, very Falloutish, too.

                            • If you really want something Falloutish, pay a visit to the Nuka-Cola Bottling Plant, and make sure you read the computer logs in the research department. The notices about the testing process on Nuka-Cola Quantum and what's an acceptable level of side effects in the test subjects are quite funny.

I ran across an old Fallout throwback earlier today: Deathclaws. Trust me, they are FAR scarier in 3D. Fast, too. They aren't quite as tough as the super mutant behemoth was, but they're harder to kill than regular super mutants.

I'm somewhere between 12 and 15 hours into the game, I would guess, and I haven't even been to any big cities other than Megaton and I haven't really entered the non-wasteland, surviving areas of DC other than Grayditch. There's a lot of stuff to do.

And Deathclaws I met a few Supermutants today, those were bad enough. Funny how most of them carry good weaponry but one had just a plank with nails
