An excellent book. It focuses solely on the post-human environment, and does not really speculate on what could cause the disappearance.

If you like more analysis of the disappearance itself, check out Collapse by Jared Diamond. It covers some common ground as World Without Us but mostly looks at how social choices of consumption vs. preservation can mean extinction or survival.

              • Bethesda announces G.E.C.K. modding tool, three downloadable packs.

First, the packs, because I'm more interested in those.

Operation: Anchorage. Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe – the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders. An action-packed battle scheduled for release in January.

The Pitt. Journey to the industrial raider town called The Pitt, located in the remains of Pittsburgh. Choose your side. Scheduled for release in February.

Broken Steel. Join the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel and rid the Capital Wasteland of the Enclave remnants once and for all. Continues the adventure past the main quest. Scheduled for release in March.
I believe that'll be the first time Anchorage or Pittsburgh have appeared in a non-sports video game.

                Now, the G.E.C.K.:

The release of the G.E.C.K. provides the community with tools that will allow players to expand the game any way they wish. Users can create, modify, and edit any data for use with Fallout 3, from building landscapes, towns, and locations to writing dialogue, creating characters, weapons, creatures, and more.
G.E.C.K. is available for the PC in January. The packs will be for the PC and XBox.

                • Wonder what they will charge?

As for G.E.C.K. it would be sweet, say The Lone Ranger meets Kwai Chang Caine meets The Omega Man meets Robert Neville in "special available weapons to fight off the night ghouls"

                  This will be so cool!!

                    • I gotta say that, thus far, ridding the Lincoln Memorial of mother****ing slavers of all things was the most viscerally satisfying experience of the game yet. Thought I had to attempt it four times to get through without losing either Charon or Dogmeat.

                      • I watched Bing go through this playing as Anton Chigurh.

Chigurh went to the Slave Town and signed up to be a slaver. One of the first things they say to him is "We've heard of you. We're not getting in your way..."

So Chigurh tries to slave a few people and sends them on their way back to Slave Town. They die on the way.

Chigurh goes back and the slavers are cursing him out. He draws and kills Grouse and his guard. Then he goes into the town further in and is promptly surrounded by about a dozen attacking slavers.

He's got Grim Reaper's Sprint at this stage. He targets three headshots on different people with the Terrible Shotgun.

Boom, boom, boom. Three headless corpses on the floor. But his APs are completely replenished...

Three more VATS targets. Three more bodies.

                        Repeat.

                        Repeat.

                        Repeat.

It gets to the point where Chigurh's standing in the middle of the square in a growing pile of limbs, bodies, and bits of skull here and there. Anybody even exiting a building to attack him merely gets a "buckshot bukkake" and his VATS replenishes immediately.

Then he methodically goes into every single house and blows off the heads of everybody he finds there.

Finally, Chigurh went to the slave pens after getting the key from Eulogy's headless corpse. He freed the slaves, but to make absolutely sure he was not misunderstood, he shot them before they'd gone ten paces.

The only things Bing was unable to kill were the children. Apparently they merely fall unconscious if you deplete their hp.

Oddly enough, Bing's character Chigurh was "Very Evil" when he entered Paradise Falls. When he left, having killed pretty much everything in it, he was merely "Evil".

                              • Is FO3 worth buying new?

I haven't been reading the thread, don't want to ruin anything in the game before playing it. Some of you have been playing it for a while and must surely have an opinion by now.
