Apparently I was right, I do have one of the new CPU's. Definately worth getting the Halo 3 Xbox

    • Agathon should look up what the original Halo was before it morphed into a FPS game.

            You stupid boy!!!!

Before Bungie was bought out, Halo was originally slated to be released for Mac (and probably PC) back in 2000. It wasn't going to be a console game, and probably not much like the game it ended up being.

The Bungie guy got up at Macworld in 1999 and specifically stated there would be online multiplayer.

I guess they had to cut it out because Microcrap couldn't get it's online service working in time. How typical.

Part of the reason for Bungie being so lame now might be that they are controlled by a company hell bent on sticking to a simple run and gun formula that any twelve year old can enjoy on XBL. Thinking shooters aren't as good for business, I guess.

              • With all of this talk about storytelling, you might think that the Halo trilogy was written by Faulkner or Hemingway. But it's probably closer to something written by Lucas or Heinlein.

                Oh sweet mercy....

"Probably PC"? Even when Jobs unveiled it at Macworld, it was announced to be available on PC and Mac "day and date".

Microcrap? Getting creative. Used to be Micro****. So smrt..so smrt..

As for Microsoft not being able to get its online service working in time...it's now 2007 and Microsoft's competitors are still WAY behind in that sector. Perhaps you picked the wrong area of MS' strategy to critique.

How is the Mac online gaming infrastructure, anyway? Last I checked, game devs needed to code all of their networking manually...no DirectPlay, no Xbox Live...

I know that, I've seen the videos. It wasn't an FPS then, or even a shooter in any traditional sense.

                    (It also looked like ass.)

That's not a multiplayer option, that's a medium. And you'll notice Halo 2 had online multiplayer done better than pretty much any FPS, and Halo 3 has online cooperative multiplayer.

You mean it took a while for MS to properly design their Live service, which is far and away the best console network ever?

                    • I don't know what happened, but I have to replay that entire mission. I beat the level again starting from the checkpoint right before the Scarab fight, but still no good. I was checking around and read that your checkpoint can be bugged, resulting in no achievement. I'll run it through again tonight or tomorrow, and hopefully finish the campaign. After that, I'll take a break before checking out some of the skulls and other hidden achievements.

                      • There is no way of knowing what Halo would be if Microsoft hadn't been bought Bungie out. It probably did look like ass in the initial screenshots of its development in 2000. Whatever. Since Bungie had been behind some innovative shooters (Marathon) and RTS's (Myth series), odds are it would've been a pretty fun game.

At this point I think no one is arguing. We all agree Halo is not a big step up from its predecessors, that it is a simplified shooting game (especially in single player), and that it has pretty graphics and sound and a mediocre storyline. We even agree that, for these reasons, the hype is a little silly for this game.

                        Argument over I think?

                        • The Myth series was ****ing awful.

And no, I'm not in agreement that Halo is a "simplified game".

                          • Because the plot is on par with Heinlein and the multiplayer is clearly beyond the skills of a twelve year old.

                            Comment

                            • The plot has nothing to do with the gameplay, and whoever CAN play it is irrelevant. I don't know a single game 12 year olds can't play.

                              • Just ordered Halo 1 along with Call of Duty 2 (for I am the shamelessly behind the curver). At worst I'm expecting a fun shooter with lotsa cool stuff in the mould of Doom, at best there's also immersion going on.
