Err, it was you that brought up the philosophy-story-makes-the-game ****...

And getting my arse kicked? By you, who thinks Warhawk is the better multiplayer game and Wiglaf, who insists Halo is in a "dead genre"?

IIRC he did some joke intro to philosophy courses. He claims to have got an A in these, although he posted a paper he had written once, and everyone else who had done philosophy thought it was poor, and that it would be unlikely he had got an A, unless the instructor was poor.
      Uh, bull****...

      A new low for you.

In fact, it's hard to think of another subject in which the introductory and advanced courses are so different.
Yes, philosophy is sooo unique. Intro to computer science is sooooooo like what 4th year university computer science courses are, right?

Depending on the school, intro to computer science means writing a game of Battleships or figuring out how to use MS Word (at UofT, it's the latter).

      • They don't even call those compsci courses here.

        • It was called Bits for Twits at my school. Philosophy majors had to take it.

          • Amazing that Halo is so popular. Has anyone here played Company of heroes? That game is great Takes RTS, then innovates. Halo takes FPS, then walks sideways.

Also asher, stop looking down on people who did not major in CS.

So, does that matter? If the Halo series (introduced in 2001?) basically polished the Doom model, and Halo3 finishes that series, is that a bad thing? If there are some genres or subgenres that are rapidly developing, and others that are retreating to niche or semi-niche status, could there not be some in more or less "equilibrium" where there isnt more to achieve but marginal improvements in production values and certain aspects of MP, but where the genre isnt going into decline? Could "old-school FPS" be one such?

I played Company of Heroes a bit. Wasn't all that interesting, actually.

I still prefer playing Warcraft III LAN. Innovate all you want, games are good for more than trying new things. Some companies just get it right.

                • Figures you prefer the more popular game. I think you ride hype waves too much.

Yeah, that's exactly it. Last week when I booted up WC3 for some LAN gaming, I was being hit hard by the WC3 hype train that I couldn't resist doing it. It was overwhelming!

Starcraft is similarly still great, all these years later despite "innovations" in Supreme Commander, WiC, Company of Heroes, etc. All these games have been hyped up, reviewed well, then are forgotten a year later. Why? Because the "innovations" are superficial and the game doesn't have the depth.

                      • No, I don't. I got bored with it and its lack of depth.

                            • I played splitscreen Halo a few times. Entertaining diversion, I guess.
