Maybe I'll get the PC version of Halo (which AFAIK is up to standards) just to see what the fuss is all about. Had a short go at the game a few years back, but it didn't really leave a marked impression on me. Whenever I read a review, check screenies etc I also always have a hard time finding elements that are attractive to me. The level design and atmosphere appear rather dull and the characters rather corny, so I can only assume the technical aspects must be beyond perfection.

It's a science fiction story about a super space marine who fights fanatic aliens and deals with a crazy AI. The story is a lot like Marathon's (a 14 year old game), except dumber, and without the compelling array of competing AIs like Tyco, Durandel and Lela.
A typical level in Halo: You need to get from point A to B. You have a gun. Do your thing. There will be people fighting around you as minor help, and occasionally a timer. Wohoo the innovation!

Also, I didn't think I'd have to state the obvious, but Halo is in a different pop-culture league than BioShock. That means far more backlash from snobs and fanboys."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

It's an XBL game...
And it doesn't compare with Halo or Halo 2."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Its story is better, which was my point. Its gameplay was also more innovative, which is sad.
Have you played it? What was innovative about the gameplay?
I love Bioshock, but its gameplay wasn't that innovative. Replace "plasmids" with "magic" and it's been all done before."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."

Durandal had some good puzzles, plus BOBS (marines in Halo), a compelling plot (better than Halo's IMO), and some cool enemies.
Halo has no puzzles, which is probably good since they're cliche'd now anyway. It's got BOBS and a similar space marine story with competing alien races and a bat**** AI.
The reason Marathon Infinity wasn't so hot is that it was just more of the same as Durandal and Marathon 1. It even had a level editor, IIRC called Phorte, and an object editor. History repeats itself..
So, anyway, imagine my surprise that in fifteen years all FPS's have done is spruce up the graphics and sound. And people are losing it in their pants for a derivative story and some new weapon effects?

I agree at this point. Halo managed to innovate with the vehicles and the good atmosphere and some varied missions. Halo 2 kept a steady pace. Now Halo 3 is...keeping a steady pace.
Can you see why my interest has declined linearly from iteration to iteration?

Halo 1: innovative, quite exciting
Halo 2 : keep steady pace, kind of exciting
Halo 3: keep steady pace, not very exciting anymore
Why should Halo 3 excite me more than 1? I don't see why I'm supposed to drop my pants for this the most exciting videogame event evar, if it's just keeping steady.

Because some people like resolution. An end to the conflict.
Judging from your Bush avatar, I can see why this doesn't appeal to you."The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."
