Well some are clearly viewing the thread as best game that happens to be a sequel, not sequel that added the most.
What if the first game was crap? Then the sequel could be much better, and qualify under Solver's or UR's definition, even if it wasn't as good overall as a sequel to a great game, like Civ2.
However... a sequel to a game that was crap, even if the sequel is mediorce, already adds a ton! I can't think of any crap game with a decent sequel right now though....
I don't know how Doom 2 counts under your definition. It was a great game, as great as Doom1. What did it add, all new levels. Yes, that doesn't seem much, more like an expansion now, but those days there were no level editors yet, no easily accessible mod community/download servers, so I'd say that adding 32 levels to a game with huge gameplay WAS a strong sequel.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

That said, SC3 wasn't BAD, either. It had its moments and was at least fair to moderately good. I certainly enjoyed myself when I played through it the first time, even if it wasn't what I was hoping for.
I had a similar reaction to Deus Ex 2. Sure, it wasn't anywhere nearly the game Deus Ex was, but as with Star Control 2, those are pretty big shoes to fill. It was a fair to moderately good game and if you don't spend the whole time you're playing the game thinking "man, this sucks COMPARED TO the first game", you might actually like it for itself.Long-time poster on Apolyton and WePlayCiv

Back to the topic of the thread, I still think that Star Control 2 wins this contest by leaps and bounds. No game can match it for both being an AWESOME game (one of the best of all time) along with being IMMENSELY better than the original game upon which it was based.
In many respects, Star Control 2 is also a sequel or at least an inheretor of the Starflight series for Atari and Amiga (by the same design team as Star Control 2, actually). Even compared to the great games that were the Starflight series, Star Control 2 still makes itself the best sequel of all time in my opinion.Long-time poster on Apolyton and WePlayCiv

I'm trying very hard to agree with you that SC3 doesn't suffer from T.F.S. (Total F*cking Suckage) Syndrome despite them intentionally wanting it to be a departure from SC2, but imo it is simply too far from its predecessor. Additionally, that game has probably killed ANY chance of there being a SC4. That's the biggest reason I dislike the sequel. The cake is NOT a lie. It's so delicious and moist.

Civ 2 is the best sequel.
Plenty of improvements over Civ 1, particularly the macro language.
As for Civ 3, well, it puts me to sleep everytime I play.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.
