  • With my home connection then you'd see me there for a long time. I'd be the character who took half an hour to turn around if attacked from behind. Besides, I've lent my codes to Spiky and won't be joining in the fun until I can get broadband, which means that you'll have to put up with him once he has kicked his City of heroes addiction. When I am ready to take over the reins (and the codes) then my arrival in the world of Folderol will be quite spectacular! (Did someone claim that it was impossible for your character to spawn in the middle of a lake? Watch as the duke bravely proves them wrong!)

    • Ah, just the person I wanted to ask... (going only slightly off the topic ) ...how much is it to get a decent connection in the UK, and how easy is it to get? You seem to be shopping in that market at the moment. I mean, this will be one of my priorities as soon as my much-delayed move to a new place in England works out. (It will have to be before the end of August, 'cos the contract on this place here runs out)

      • It's my specialist subject (well, one of them).

You want 'full service' (I presume), meaning a package with no bandwidth limits and no blocking of the file sharing ports (so you can download legal backups of the games you buy, of course ). This is usually just over £20 p/m, though you can get it down to approx. £15 p/m if you take a surf only package. Most of these would allow you to play NWN, but check the restrictions carefully if you do go this route.

As for ISPs I use Plusnet, which have reliable service. Also reliable are Nildram and Freedom2surf. There are others, and you should always check to see the current situation with an ISP, since sometimes they get customers faster than they can update infrastructure and a formerly good ISP can dive fast. Check the forums at http://www.dslguide.org/ before you choose.

As for ease, place an order (approx £60 up front) and 7 days later you are in business.

        • Only 20 quid a month! Wheeeeee!

Yeah, "full service" would be needed - I get through a lot of gigs each month - and a fast connection too, of course. I think a good internet connection is something worth paying top-dollar for

Erm... I'll check out that link, and return this thread back to NWN

          • Well they are all 1/2MB for that price (mine is £22), though you can get 1MB connections (120k/s useable bandwidth) for £40 or so if you are desperate.

            • /me is desperate*

Thanks, sounds like a good price

              • Now that I have HotU, would it be worthwhile installing it now and then restarting my OC game? I haven't played it for ages, but my girlfriend has work to do this evening, and my softball match has been moved to tomorrow, so I find myself with a window of opportunity.
I doubt that I can instal HotU and keep playing the current game with the extra classes, spells, etc so what would anyone advise? I reckon that since my fighter hasn't even used her bow since I picked it up for nothing in the training hall, then I won't ever make arcane archer, and would probably need a better INT score to be able to get the spells anyway. So I can play through as a mundane fighter (level 3, 3 levels of fighter) or I could start again with a better idea of what to do (and a much better CHA, so that I actually get some other quests).

                • Speaking of starting again, I'm about to start my new character (and have been at this stage since about June). What would people recommend? I generally go fighter without any of that spell-type stuff.
I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

                    • Any excuse for a +1 eh Skanky?

I seem to find that bog-standard fighter is the easiest way to start playing many games, but I'm considering starting again with something a little more interesting. You can always pick up a goon as a henchman in the city, and you get a fighter henchman automatically in the training rooms. Plus, if you do the wizard training then apparently you get some neat items, and can still pick up the free weapons in the fighting room. Go wizard! Or thief with spells. That might be fun. I doubt that NWN can be played as Thief, but it would add an extra element to your game certainly.

You can install HotU and keep playing your OC, it makes no difference. However, if you feel you have gimped your character then reroll.

                          • In BG, you can sit there all afternoon pressing the reroll button, but in NWN it just seems to give you the scores and then lets you adjust them.
ie, it's bloody hard to ever get anything above 16!
Is there a way of getting better stats without just cheating, or do I have to decide how best to allocate a certain number of points? This is tough, because if you want anything good then it costs 2 points to go from 16 to 17 and another two from 17 to 18. I realise that you can improve your stats in the game by using items, but I'd like a half-chance at the start. Or am I being too demanding?

[edit] Skanky, is your niece called clea? Because the letters are someway apart on the keyboard, and it'd be tough to hit that combination at random so many times.

                            • Reroll doesn't mean reroll.

The term is used for every game, even those that you pick all the stats like NWN.

So I meant restart if you aren't happy with your character, and aren't too far into the game.

                              • For first run though the fighter advice is good. I played SoU and HotU as a fighter/WM, then played the OC as a wizard. Let us know if you restart and we can talk builds.
