  • Played Dungeon of Apolyton a bit. Died.

I know that Jam said (either in the readme, or on NWVault) that it would not be easy as a wizard, but I tried it anyway, and the second goblin I met took both my HP with nothing more than a dirty look. Oops. Damned cowardly henchmen!
I tried the same character in the OC, but once again died when both HP were swiftly removed by one of the mystery wizards who summon the goblins arrived. I attacked him, perhaps foolishly given the outcome, before the goblins arrived and he cast frost on me which disposed of 2 HP a bit too swiftly for my liking.
I then created a human rogue (with 7HP!) to play the OC from chapter 1, instead of doing the prologue again. I failed my first attempt at persuasion on the bloke in the temple, but had saved beforehand so will try again wiht my CHA of 16. This is a better all-round character than the wizard so we'll see what happens, but you have to start at level 1, rather than getting the bonus level up as part of your training.
Anyhoose, the duchess required my proof-reading skills not long after I started so I had to give up.

    • 2hp?

      Two hit points!?

You must've had the constitution of ladybug.

      • Well it was about 8 or so. Plus, I am spectacularly unlucky with my HP rolls. I mentioned in the BG thread consecutively getting kensai with only 1 HP and then being killed in a cut scene.

        • You always get max hitpoints for your starter level, and wizards get 1d4 hit points so you must've had 6 or 7 constitution (with -2 penalty). You'd die from a common cold.

          • - this sounds like one of my famous 6 CON wizards. You HIDE untill you can get spells like Stoneskin, and even THEN you hide! We're talking level 20 with 32 HP here guys Some level 2 characters have that much!

I think for solo play - especially as a wizard - you're going to need CON pretty high. It affects concentration checks too for Wizards. I'd also summon the best monster you can and your pet, and get a henchman... that might be enough of a zoo to keep you safe

And Nettle Burglers are actually pretty tough. Kill one of those at level 1 or 2 and GASP at the xp they give. I'm going to stick my neck out and predict 600 xp.

            • It was an elven wizard......

But even so, I definitely had more than 7 CON. 8 at the very least, maybe 9. I tried casting magic armour before going through to the fight, but that didn't work.

              • My wizard for the OC was:

Str 10, Dex 14, Con 14, Wis 8, Int 18, Cha 8, though you could take the expensive last 2 points off of INT to buy more dex (I was elven) or charisma. Wisdom you wont need.

                • Basically the early fights try to use a summon, even the basic rubbishy ones. Once you get Daelen you'll fare much better.

                  • I just wanted more CHA because the first time I played (with a fighter) I couldn't persuade anyone to give me any quests beyond the really obvious plot one.

                    • I managed ok with my wizard (actually thinking about it maybe I did go 10 CHA 16 Dex 16 INT) and a few points in persuade.

well I admit the burglar got me close to death. I actually had to use some tactics with that one.

                        • iirc, persuasion isn't all that useful in the original campaign. You can complete the game without it. You should be able to do most of the side quests without it. The main thing I think it does, is allow you to get bigger rewards for stuff.

                          • And you can also threaten for similar results, though you get an alignment shift towards evil.

                            • If you want to have high charisma and not be gimp you could try a sorceror or bard.

                              • Sorry General, but in my book bards are gimps anyway, so that halves the possibilities there. I am tempted by a sorceror though.
My wizard was chaotic good (perhaps the closest to me in RL), but my rogue is CN, and any shifts toward evil would tip the balance entirely!
