  • Can you cast Protection from Fire on more than one person?
I've got the mage robe for protection from fire, and two potions, but I guess the robe ain't much use.

    • There are also green scrolls of Protection from Fire or Magic, and the spell Protection from Fire/Cold. Oh, and a few rings of Protection from Fire. Just make sure the weaker members of the party have at least 75% protection - 100% is ideal, but not always possible.

That's all right. Your past actions have already given you a high reputation of wussiness.

Does your reputation carry forward with yourcharacter (and your gold kecks)?

        • And the level 2 Cleric spell Resist Fire/Cold, and the level 3 Cleric Spell Protection from Fire, and the level 4 mage spell Minor Globe of Invunerablity (Fireballs should be completly nullified by this last one.)

Jammi Having fun with fundie religion vs DnD. Thats like, SO 1980's, aint it?

POTM and her two best friends from SYNAGOGUE have an RPG going that theyve made up - its vaguely DnDish, but closer to just playing make believe - they have special powers, planes, power objects but dont roll dice or have a formal DM. Theyve drawn in several synagogue kids, all of whom continue to be good Synagogue kids. Only real problem is when she posts to her friends webboard based on this game, instead of doing here homework. But then we can all sympathize with THAT

Oh and she HAS asked about the part of Torah that bans witchcraft - as a Harry Potter fan that troubles her. Had to look it up in my copy of "Everymans Talmud". it turns out its by no means simple, some things we would call occult (like astrology) were accepted by the Talmudic rabbis, while other things werent. Its a question, as always, of interpretation. It served as a nice launching pad, for the question of interpretation. I'll have to find more midrash (rabbinic interpretavive texts) on the subject to discusss with her.

It would be very interesting to see a game based on Jewish/kabbalistic magical traditions, but Im not counting on it. Maybe it could be done in NWN. I dont know enough of that stuff to add much, myself. I do notice that PS:T mentions a plane called "gehenna", the Jewish hell/purgatory. Not sure if thats an import from Pnp DnD.

            • 1984 actually LotM. Tell PotM that its good to use one's fantasy when one is young, as it will last one's whole life that way.

And tell her its ok to pretend to be a wizard and pretend to cast spells, same as some boys pretend to be soldiers and shoot people. Its only a game, and murder is worse than witchcraft anyway Using magic to fireball people though... hmm... its a nice combination.

              • That cartoon actually looks familiar. I don't remember the early 80's that much. But I do remember some anti-D&D stuff. And a lot of cool satanic metal back in those days. Those were the days

Oh she understands that pretend is OK. No one in MY form of Judaism would suggest that PRETEND magic is wrong - the relevant Torah portion doesnt ban anything POTM is actually doing. Her concern is more academic - WHY does the Torah ban this, since magic COULD be good IF it existed? Asking such hypotheticals is a VERY Jewish thing to do - as such Im very pleased that she is asking. Thats how we explore the texts, and how we show honor to G-d's word - by taking it seriously enough to worry about even hypothetical applications of it - and to question it aggressively. I wouldnt want to belong to a religion that DIDNT encourage questioning and debate.

Whats interesting is that the originators of DnD actually started as military miniatures players, IIUC, and first got into the role playing thing in the context of a political spin - off of wargaming - I think they were modeling post WW2 US occupation of a town in Germany, or something like that. Then the fantasy thing took off, and of course displaced and exceeded the 1970's wargaming fad.

Gehenna is one of the Ethereal planes in D&D, I believe. Other planes are the "Nine Hells"-->of Asiatic Literature... The "Seven Heavens", "Nirvana", etc. (It's all in the Deities and Demigods handbook- $29.99 at your local bookseller ... and if they don't carry it- tell them to go to Limbo!]

You see- each of the planes is for a different alignment.

Limbo is for NEUTRAL NEUTRAL (I think)
Nine Hells is for CHAOTIC NEUTRAL (I think)
Nirvana is for NEUTRAL GOOD (I think)

                        and so on.

                        • oh, by the way, just wondering, does anyone know of any Guides for IWD2 that cover Chapter 6 and beyond?

I found a great one up to Chapter 5 and I'm nearly done with the chapter... and I'm starting to worry that I might have issues with Chapter 6 and am hoping that it doesn't have any 'weird tricks' like that **** Ice Temple In chapter 2/3.

30 dollars of a Dn D handbook No, im not that much into this stuff. The different planes for different alignments IS mentioned in PS:T, by the traveller who tells you about them.

Actually i wouldnt mind seeing the old Jamski quote on Sigil as a soupspoon - somebody had that as a sig quote, but i cant find it now.
