In my opinion, a trick is considered anything that is not written in the official manual that comes with the game, or the in-game "Great Library".

The "mine-under-city" or "farm-under-city" - "tile improvement-under-city" if you prefer - is not just a trick, it is actually a bug, something that was not designed to work that way. Except that it is not referred anywhere in the manual or Great Library, if you try to build a tile improvement above a city or if you have one already built and then build a city above it either it won't be built or will disappear respectively. Thus it is a bug.

Utilization of a bug that can be avoided and does give benefits against opponents is banned according to the PBEM Rules v2.0 and generally codamned in discussions that have taken place in this forum in the past. Unless is agreed by all parties in a game - which is the case in the SuperLeague games regarding the "farm-under-city" trick/bug - it should be avoided.

And please all, do not open such long discussions in threads of a different subject, like this one. It is very frustrating for people that are interested solely on the specific subject the thread was created for. Use the "CtP-Multiplayer Cafe" thread or start a new one. I personally don't have a problem with that but other do have whether they post it or not

Many consider cheating, a strategy. It needs to be made clear in this Multiplayer Strategy Guide thread that cheating is not a strategy, it is just plain old cheating. This is confusing because many game makers actually mix the two together and actually publish Cheats along with a Strategy Guide making them seem one in the same.

not exactly sure if this belongs under strategy, but it is relevant for multiplaying:

blackice, you havent told me yet if using different language CTPs in an online game will cause errors. cause if not, why should modifying city names in the civ_str file cause them ?

also, blackice, could you please help me get my LAN multiplaying working too the other day ?

I think the answer to the different language is obvious.. Activision wrote the 1.2 and 1.21 upgrades to facilitate on line play (which suggests players from different parts of the world) so it would follow that the different languages will work, whereas individuals altering files will always cause problems... Like scenario not found..

I amy be wrong, but it would appear an obvious answer.

hmm. possible, but my suggestion would rather be that the patches handle those implicit problems with online playing independent of the language and that changing city names doesnt hurt.
but well... lets first play some games that do work.

Where are the language details included Math?? In the Patch or in separate slic files or whatever they are called? I always assumed the patch (which is different for different language versions) would handle it.. Which suggests that there is something internal to CTP prog itself that handles the different languages.

I do agree though, try the clean version first then if you really need to add city name changes (which you could do manually anyway) try them later!

usually in .txt files.
for example the civ_str.txt file which includes the city names also includes language data (actually the city names are different in different languages anyway IIRC).

After all we have the facility to rename a city what we like and that does not cause compatability issues.
