The Cougs could conceivably go winless if they drop their game against Portland State next week. And given the trouble PSU gave to the Beavers, that's entirely possible.

How is it worse than before? Nobody is eliminated yet, but a single loss always dented hopes of a championship in the BCS era. If anything, one loss is less damaging than before, as there are 4 slots for championship contenders instead of just 2.

First, it's week 2, for heaven's sake. If MSU runs the table, for instance, they would definitely be in the conversation. A lot of stuff can go down in the other conferences, too.

Second, I repeat: how would the B1G championship prospects be any better under the BCS system?

I can't see Sparty in the playoffs even when they run the table unless Oregon quits playing football due to a complicated scenario involving avian prostitutes and a dancing bear.

MSU runs the table for the rest of the season, racking up lopsided wins. Wins the B1G championship. Oregon goes undefeated and wins the Pac-12, ending the season as #1. FSU loses a regular-season game. The top teams in either the Big 12 or SEC drop 1-2 games. In that case, I think MSU would still very much be in the hunt.

Boris, FSU at one loss is in over MSU big wins or not. Oregon is in. SEC will have two teams in most likely. MSU had one chance and blew it - now their schedule with a weak big ten is just too poor to show they should be in with a loss.

If Oregon is undisputed #1, the MSU loss doesn't look so bad. I doubt they'd be penalized for blowing out the rest of the B1G. If there aren't any undefeated SEC teams, I think MSU stands a decent chance. It's not like the SEC SoS is generally that good. And I disagree about FSU. If they lose a game, it would have to be to a middling opponent, as their schedule is pretty weak. They'll drop out of the top 5 if so.
