I wouldn't go that far. Northwestern lost pretty much everyone worthwhile from last year's team; they'd be lucky to win 4 games all year.

The only team they beat? Portland State.

SPEAKING OF PORTLAND STATE... the Vikings just gave a huge scare to Oregon State. The Beavers were absolutely disgusting on offense. The O-Line was a sieve. Their defense forced some turnovers, but PSU had 2 unforced ones that really killed them. 29-14 against such a team is simply not very good.

I hear ya, but I stand by my point: Cal is improved. Very much so. I think they're going to avoid being bottom of the conference this season. That's not to say they will have a winning season or anything.

The Pac seems to be-top heavy with strong teams who dominated their opponents easily, and then has the teams that struggled. UCLA stands out as the team that had the highest expectations and fell flat on its face. If it weren't for 3 defensive touchdowns... they'd have lost, badly.

Washington (starting QB was suspended, so maybe that explains barely beating Hawaii?)

How often does a team screw up a snap and manage to turn it into a touchdown?

My Badgers still have a chance, despite the loss last night. It will depend greatly on the severity of the injuries to the D line. One game at Iowa (yes, I know they're not very good, but Wisconsin traditionally plays poorly there) and one against Nebraska. If we run the table and win the Big 10 Championship game against possible national contenders in Mich St and Ohio State, we could still be in the picture for the #4 playoff spot.

I don't think any big 10 team other than OSU has a chance any more - with that loss, the Big 10 is just not a strong enough overall conference this year. Maybe if everyone else wins out their nonconference schedules, and those nonconference teams like Notre Dame win out against everyone else - but I doubt that. The voters are going to see Wisconsin beat OSU and remember OSU almost losing to Navy, and decide the Big 10 is just not that good.
