I tend to like the ends as well, but in my mind that includes the 1-2-3 and 8-9-10 (or 10-11-12 as the case might be) slots. Personally, I'm a big proponent of the #2 position (either 2nd or 2nd from last), but I've only had that slot a couple times.
The draft is about adapting your strategy and tactics to the situation. My philosophy is that for any given draft order, in any given year, there's a winning strategy. And with 14 playoff (top-4) teams out of 22 Yahoo leagues played over 9 years (15/23 if you count 2012 Auction League, which is draft-neutral), I think I can make a pretty solid case for that.
