  • Good luck to Warner, and yes, he should be an automatic HOF. His stats are as good as just about any of the greats.

I will miss him... because now there is one less QB to take in Fantasy Football

      This.

He's toned it down lately to some degree, like you said. Mostly I dislike him now because of media overload -- I'm sick of hearing how good a role model he is, rags to riches, helps people, blah, blah, blah. Same reason I'm sick of Tim Tebow.

      • I don't necessarily find it objectionable about him working God into interviews, because I think mostly it was him just praising God for the opportunity or helping him on the field or whatnot.

And really, DM, would you rather they focus on Plaxico Burress or Ray Lewis or Michael Vick as people to emulate? It's nice when the media showcases a good person.

        • That's how I feel about it. I think I would be very grateful if I went from stocking shelves to the NFL.

PHILADELPHIA -- Former Philadelphia Eagles star Tom Brookshier has died at 78.

The Eagles said he had cancer and died Friday night.

Brookshier was an All-Pro defensive back who played on the Eagles' 1960 championship team. He had 20 interceptions in seven seasons with the team, earning All-Pro honors in 1959 and 1960.

After he retired, Brookshier announced NFL games for CBS. He teamed with Pat Summerall to form CBS' top telecast team.

He is one of seven Eagles to have his number retired.

"Tom Brookshier is one of all-time greats, both for what he did on the field and for the kind of man he was off the field," Eagles head coach Andy Reid said in a team statement. "I will always remember him for his booming and bright personality. He had an uncanny love for life, a love for his family and a love for the game of football, especially for the Philadelphia Eagles. He bled green and I will always cherish our conversations and the relationship that we fostered throughout my tenure in Philadelphia."

I get overloaded on both. Vick is not the devil. Warner is not an angel. Favre is not the world's most indecisive man (well, exception to every rule I guess). It's just typical media hyperbole and dead-horse-beating that wears me down -- I end up resenting the player instead of the messenger. No different than any other news media, I just consume waaaaayyyy more ESPN than CNN or CBS news.

That's the thing -- he was stocking shelves to supplement his Arena League salary. He was still a professional football player. Sure, not many two time league MVPs ever had to stock shelves, but the story has taken on a life of its own. It wasn't like he was out of football, he's just a grinder.

                • He won't be ruining your day anymore.

Warner leaves the game with a legacy that could land him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame even though he didn't make his first NFL start until he was 28.

In a comparison with the 14 quarterbacks to make the Hall of Fame in the last 25 years, Warner has a better career completion percentage, more yards per pass attempt and more yards per game. Only Dan Marino, Brett Favre and Peyton Manning had more career 300-yard passing games.

In 124 regular-season games, Warner completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 32,344 yards and 208 touchdowns. He and Fran Tarkenton are the only NFL quarterbacks to throw for 100 touchdowns and 14,000 yards for two teams.

Cardinals general manager Rod Graves called Warner's retirement emotional "because I realize once again how extraordinary he was."

Warner played three seasons in the Arena Football League and one in NFL Europe, mixed in with a stint stocking grocery shelves back in Iowa. He made the Rams as a backup in 1998, then was thrust into the starting role in 1999 when Trent Green was injured.

Martz interviewing for Bears’ offensive coordinator job
Posted: January 29th, 2010 | NFL.com Staff | Tags: Chicago Bears, Lovie Smith, Mike Martz, Rod Marinelli, Ron Turner

Mike Martz arrived in Chicago on Friday to interview for the Bears’ offensive coordinator position, NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi confirmed through a league source.

Martz had two ties to the Bears. Coach Lovie Smith was Martz’s defensive coordinator with the St. Louis Rams. Martz also was Bears defensive line coach Rod Marinelli’s offensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions.

Martz mostly recently was in the NFL in 2008, when he was the San Francisco 49ers’ offensive coordinator. He spent the 2009 season out of coaching and worked for NFL Network as an analyst.

The Bears are seeking an offensive coordinator to replace Ron Turner, who was fired after the season.
I wonder if this is for real, or just part of the "show"...

                      • Interesting timing too. In the wake of Warner's retirement, a lot of people are recalling that back in the "Greatest Show on Turf" Days, people were saying that Warner was a product of Martz's system. After the last two years, however, people are now openly wondering if Martz looked better because of Warner rather than the other way around.

                        • It seems odd to hire a guy who's system is based on 3- and 4-wide formations to come to a team that likes to run the ball and relies on the TE position in the pass game. Martz rarely max-protects and rarely uses the TE. With the Bears' O-line woes, his system could get Cutler killed.

                          • Well Martz met with Cutler this weekend so we should hear soon whether Cutler gave the domini-domini.

                            • He also runs west coast offense.

What Cutler and the Bears need is a Coryell disciple.

                              • What they need is an offensive line. If they had that piece in place, the system wouldn't be much of a concern.
