They already tried Coryell with Ron Turner. Erhardt-Perkins might work for the Bears w/ some additions to the passing game (RB screens and so on).

    • At the end of the day, they still need an offensive line. No system will really work without one.
Granted, we've been spoiled over the years by having a solid O Line that just keeps coming back year after year.
But anything would be better than the crap we saw this year. It's tough to run or pass with no help up front.

      • Now that we know Forte underwent surgery on his knee also may explain some of their lackluster performance running. It was hurt at the beginning of the season.

Well sure, and he was, for the most part successful. The issues were with the line and with the defense.

The reason I suggest Coryell is because Sweet Baby Cutler is good on deep passes, so you play to his strengths.

          • Martz likes the 20-yd out with 5-man protection. It could be scary, but at least Cutler's got the arm for it.

If they really want to play to his strengths, they should run a lot of stretch -- run off tackle, slants and screens, and put Cutler into a lot of floating pocket and rollout situations. One of Turner's big problems was not using Cutler's mobility until late in the year -- when the offense suddenly looked competent. Despite the O-line's woes.

I don't have a lot of confidence that Martz will adapt well to the tools he will have at hand. Singletary in SF has the same "running off the bus" mentality as Lovie, and the Martz thing was notably sucky there.

But we shall see. This will be a make/break year for the entire Bears administration. At least if they go down in flames, it will be with a high-profile guy and not some college guy or position coach running his first pro offense.

            • It will be interesting to see if Martz is actually allowed to run the offense the way he wants, or whether he will be restriced by Lovie... Yes, we shall "see"

              • If he's restricted, it will be by personnel.

Martz used to be Lovie's boss, and loves to talk to the media, so yeah, it could be interesting. I have no idea what the team will be like, but I'm prepared for a total train wreck. It could easily happen. But if Lovie can whip the defense back together, they could turn out to be a lot of fun to watch.

So I guess I'm pessimistic on the team itself, but optimistic for its entertainment value.

Hey, at least he's not filming an anti-abortion commercial funded by a right-wing religious group to air during the Super Bowl. That would be truly obnoxious.

                    • Warner should be a QB coach. He could teach players like Cutler how they should really be doing it. He couldn't teach Russell in Oakland how to play. Anything and everyone has their limits.

I'm trying to figure out if you think Martz is a West Coast offense guy... and if so, WTF?

                          • For the Bears, it might not even matter what kind of "guy" he is. It may end up what kind of guy Lovie wants him to be. If that's the case, nothing has really change, so I hope that Martz will be given the chance to do what he thinks is right with the personal that he currently has.

Currently has is right since the draft isn't going to be very helpful.
And most likely if we get anybody through FA or trading, it will be a flier on someone that was hurt last year, and if it's a trade, our remaining draft picks will be used.
