  • Here's an interesting note, one that was mentioned on the broadcast yesterday:

Much of the Wings success can probably be attributed to not paying much for goaltending. Chris Osgood has the 27th highest salary amongst NHL goalies this season, at $1.7m. That's fully $6.8m less than the highest paid, Kiprusoff. Yes, Ozzy stuggled during the regular season, but no one has been better in the playoffs over the past couple seasons, and it is the playoffs that matter.

Hell, the Blackhawks have over $12m in goal between Khabibulin and Huet. That's over $10m the Red Wings can spend on other pieces (i.e., Hossa). And Ozzy's salary is going to decrease over the next two seasons.

Ken Holland: best GM in pro sports. No one else is even close.

    • Salary isn't really important -- cap hit is.

Kipper is 5th there (behind Lundqvist, Luongo, Khabibulin, Giguere) and Osgood is 34th.

Next season, Kipper is tentatively 6th (now behind Backstrom) while Osgood is 26th.

      • Even better.

The biggest question facing the Wings this off-season will be if they can convince Hossa to stay for about ~1m less, as Z and the Mule are gonna have big jumps in their cap hit.

        • FWIW, I don't buy the argument that the Wings are good because of not spending on goaltending.

The Wings are outstanding at player development. Simple as that. Their goaltending situation is downright scary, not something to aspire to.

I'd rather spend $5-6M on an outstanding goaltender in terms of cap space than on a single skater. It's a better RoI.

          • Swap Hossa or Rafalski for Brodeur...and Detroit would be saving money in addition to being a better team.

            • Oh, no doubt they excel in that as well. Really, of their core players, Hossa is the only one who hasn't been with the team and/or farm system for several years. EDIT: yeah, Rafalski too. Mea culpa.

Honestly, at this point, I'd be more comfortable with Ozzy in net during the playoffs than any other goalie in the league. Even Brodeur has struggled and choked in the spring in recent years. My only wish is that they give Howard more time in the net next season to develop him; Ozzy may still have a babyface, but he's 35 years old now. (Christ, that makes me feel old.)

Brodeur has far better numbers than Osgood in the playoffs this year, and all the others as well.

The Wings are good despite Osgood, not because of him.

                  • On a per-dollar basis, Ozzy may be better ROI. But...

                    Those Brodeur numbers rule!!
                    GAA < 2 with TWENTY-THREE shutouts? Ridiculous.

I'm certainly no expert, but it sure seems to be accepted virtual dogma that the highest correlation between Cup winner and position play is accepted as fact.

So spare no expense for that #1 guy, I say.

That becomes affordable if you have someone young, cheap -- and good -- playing G behind him. The Hawks need to pick one of these guys and stick with him. Trade whichever one gets them the most value elsewhere. (Seems to me we've got a couple defensemen with a tendency to turn it over at bad times...) Huet is much better than he showed yesterday.

Guy -- I haven't given up hope. But if I was a betting man...

Sorry, was looking at the regular season numbers.

Osgood's numbers have come recently when he has not been an unbelievably good goalie. He's been a decent one. Osgood does not steal games.

Any assclown could go in net for Detroit right now and put up good stats. Exhibit A: Ty Conklin.

                      • Was Dom Hasek any ass clown?

He got yanked after struggling at the start of last year's playoffs, when the Wings were in danger of losing in the first round to the Preds.

Ozzy came in in Game Five, and rattled off nine straight wins.

The common wisdom is that Ozzy doesn't steal games, but that is simply not true. He has, does, and will continue to do so.

When the chips are down, he is one of the most reliable goalies in the league. Come playoff time, he's a bargain at twice the price.

IIRC he holds claim to the title of King AssClown.

He seems to perform well in the playoffs, but the fact is I don't see him doing anything other than be an average player. Hasek has been awful and loathworthy for years, even if Detroit's D masked it for a bit.

                          • If it were so easy to win the Cup with the Wings, how come Hasek only managed it once? Not to mention Curtis Joseph, or any other goalie?

Why has Ozzy already done it twice, and has a chance for a third time?
