  • Randall Cunningham had a far better NFL career than Flukie.
Just for kicks I wanted to see how they stack up if you only include the years that Flutie played in the NFL.

    18296 yards,
    124 TDs,
    88 INTS,
    1482 COMPLETIONS,
    2667 ATTEMPTS
    55.56 CMP pct

    14715 yards,
    86 TDS,
    68 INTS,
    1177 COMPLETIONS,
    2151 ATTEMPTS
    54.70 CMP pct

Oddly, these stats actually catch all of Randall's best years while avoiding his bad ones. He also appeared in about 10 more games, while starting in about 15 more too.

FWIW, Flutie only started about 2/3rds of his games while Randall started 80 percent, which is a huge difference.

    • Cunningham had JUST enough QB talent to play. It was always touch-and-go. Better than Vick, but that's not saying a lot.

Only if you added in 1990 to 1993 for Cunningham, which Flutie did not play in the NFL for. After all, 1990 and 1992 were Cunningham's 2nd and 3rd best passing seasons (and in addition to passing so well in 1990, he ran for over 900 yards and 5 TDs)

          • Report: Jets' Favre has torn biceps tendon

NEW YORK (AP) — Jets quarterback Brett Favre reportedly has a torn biceps tendon in his right arm that will not need major surgery to repair, ESPN said Tuesday.

The 39-year-old Favre routinely underthrew receivers and appeared to lose some velocity on his throws late in the season as the Jets went 1-4 down the stretch and failed to make the playoffs. ESPN, citing unnamed sources, reported that Favre would need arthroscopic surgery to repair the injury, but could also play without having an operation.

Favre's agent, James ``Bus'' Cook, did not immediately respond to e-mail and phone messages left by The Associated Press seeking comment.

After the Jets' season-ending 24-17 loss to Miami on Sunday, Favre said he's been feeling discomfort in his strong right arm "for quite a while.'' He also complained of pain in the back of the shoulder, the biceps and sometimes in his neck.

Favre, who also reportedly has some calcification in the area of the injury, is expected to take several weeks to decide whether he will return to the Jets, ESPN reported.

The Jets are currently searching for a new head coach after firing Eric Mangini after three seasons on Monday. Favre's performance down the stretch - two touchdowns and nine interceptions - was a major factor in the team's collapse.

He finished with 22 touchdown passes, but also led the league with 22 interceptions.

First off, he never got started early on in his career in the NFL, one of the reasons he left to the CFL.

Secondly, when he came back do you remember Rob Johnson? The most productive years Flutie had were playing as his backup at the age of 37. Flutie only got put in every game after Rob Johnson got injured, because Johnson had the big contract.

I consider him a great based on his amazing stats in the CFL. Despite playing less then a decade, he was far and away the greatest QB up in the league. It's a real shame that when he was in his prime that the NFL never got to see him play.

If he was given the same chance in the NFL as he got in the CFL, then we wouldn't be arguing about his HOF status today.

              • So he was a great CFL player. Doesn't mean he would have been a great NFL player.

Probably a good reason for it.

Exactly. There would be no question that Flutie deserved to be kept out.

Flutie was cool in his BC Hail Mary success and was a serviceable QB, but no way that he was better than any of the actual HoF'ers.

I mean dude, way to set your goals low.

I think 6,600 yards passing is just a wee bit over the 'servicable' line.

Ben, do you not even pay attention to what other people are saying? Or do we need to call the Pope in here to tell you what you're utterly ignoring? He left the NFL for the CFL because he was a scab, for one, and secondly because he failed to throw more TDs than INTs in three seasons with the Patriots. Why should they have started him??

Call him what he was: one of the greatest CFL players of all time. That's accurate, and nothing anyone would disagree with. It's utterly illogical to claim that he would have been a HOFer in the NFL if only they'd let him play, because with (depending on the year) around thirty teams in the NFL, there's nearly always someone willing to take a chance on talent; if he'd had the talent to play QB as a starter in 1990 in the NFL, he'd have stayed in the NFL. Instead, he followed the money, and the starts, to Canada, where he could be a big fish in a smaller pond, and he excelled. There wasn't a Flutie-Hating Association in the NFL (other than those players who disliked him because he was a scab - but that's certainly his OWN choice, and those players weren't GMs or owners deciding who starts); he preferred to star in the CFL, and did so.

You're going way overboard. He was good, leave it at that.

                              • If you're going to dis anyone for giving up on Flutie, Ben, blame the Patriots.

When players come into NFL training camps, they compete. Post-draft camp, OTAs, classroom stuff, the whole nine yards. Flutie DIDN'T GO THROUGH THE PROCESS. Instead, he chose to play in the USFL coming out of college (New Jersey Generals, owned by Donald trump) -- an upstart, basically minor league operation -- where he did not really distinguish himself.

The Bears picked him up from the Rams (who held his NFL rights) due to dire emergency. He flopped, under admittedly adverse conditions. They couldn't use him and traded him to...

New England, where he had 3 years to make an impression (87-89). This should have been the prime of his development, but it didn't show on the field in the NFL. Played in 16 games over 3 years, amassing 11 TDs and 14 INTs; he had 143 completions in 295 attempts. Do the math.

That's when he went up north to play with people his own size, where he indeed excelled.
