  • Well, ****.

    Keys to the game:
-McGeough controls this game, never doubt that . The completely unacceptably missed call immediately leads to an Edmonton rush which then forces Calgary to take a penalty which then permitted the GWG on the powerplay in an otherwise excellent, close game.
    - Dwayne Roloson was on tonight
    - Unbelievably bad luck on that deflection-deflection-deflection-post in the last minute...
+ Edmonton is now tied with Vancouver. Haha!

    • Edmonton-- needs to get 2 more points (in 3 games) than BOTH Nashville and Vancouver get (in four games)-- the bluntest example is that if Edmonton goes 3-0 neither of Nashville or Van can be better than 2-2
If Edmonton goes 3-0 and Vancouver goes 3-1, Calgary is out.

Incorrect again-- on those facts Calgary would not necessarily be out-- They could have won their game with Minnesota-- Edmonton is now 4 points behind Calgary with only 2 left so cannot catch Calgary if Calgary gets a single point in the next 4 games-- Calgary MIGHT be out if Nashville had ha

Correct would be to say If Edmonton goes 3-0 and Vancouver goes 3-1 AND Calgary goes 0-4 (the prior two assumptions mean they must lose 3 ), Calgary absolutely will miss the playoffssince Vancouved and Edmonton will surpass them regardless of what Nashville does

. . .. . and it still wouldn't assure Edmonton AND Vancouver a spot depending on what Nashville does--

Thats the scenarioes we are down to with Calgary-- oh and also Colorado really -- If 2-3 teams win out and this team loses out-- x or y happens-- not likely but possible

The more plausible battle is that 3 way fight for eigth where Nashville really has their own fate in their hands

        • The problem is that Vancouver and Calgary play twice against each other, so the second implies the first.

There is certainly a very real risk of them missing the playoffs the longer Edmonton stays in. Calgary had a chance to eliminate one of their biggest rivals and failed to pull the trigger.

It didn't help that the refs were gifting the game.

Calgary is 1-5 with McGeough reffing this season. That's statistically significant.

I'm honestly not sure why you're focusing on scenarios where Calgary misses the playoffs. Isn't Vancouver on a four game skid and currently sitting on the outside looking in while Calgary is in sixth? In a lot of ways, having Edmonton win last night pissed Vancouverites the most, so it's not all bad since Edmonton is not a real threat to Calgary.

It seems to me if one of Calgary or Vancouver is likely to miss the playoffs, it's the team on a losing streak whose only star player is playing like **** down the stretch and is already out of the playoffs. Just a thought.

            • Though I can see why you're focusing on the Flames missing the playoffs. It's escapism.

Honestly the way they are playing Edmonton deserves a playoff spot over Calgary.

Calgary is 1-5 with McGeough reffing this season. That's statistically significant.
Assuming a .500 record, any 6 games, there is a 1/8 chance that they will randomly go 1-5.

Given a period of 82 games, we would expect to see 2 such sequences over the course of the year.

Edmonton is not a real threat to Calgary.
Obviously not, since they beat Calgary. You guys had a chance to put a nail in their coffin. As a result there are several scenarios that are left open.

As opposed to the team going on a road trip needing 2 of four to clinch?

Canucks are in charge of their destiny. They win 4, they are in no matter what.

I've been a fan longer then they've been talking about the Canucks.

They are not in good shape right now, but I like the fact that Calgary is overconfident. It makes me happy.

I am very clearly referring to the threat of forcing Calgary out of the playoffs.

Edmonton is a huge threat to Vancouver, not to Calgary.

You guys had a chance to put a nail in their coffin. As a result there are several scenarios that are left open.
Not a single person in Calgary is overly upset with this. You know why? Because it pissed Vancouver off more than it pissed us off in the grand scheme of things. Calgary doesn't need Edmonton's nail in the coffin, Vancouver does.

As opposed to the team going on a road trip needing 2 of four to clinch?
Yeah, absolutely! Calgary's not too bad on the road. In fact, Calgary's longest winning streak was on the road (6 road victories in a row).

Canucks are in charge of their destiny. They win 4, they are in no matter what.
That is quite obviously a very tall order for the team. They've won 0 of their last 4 in similar gut-check scenarios. And impressively, every game they play they get worse. I don't think they can handle the pressure.

Ben, don't you even bother pretending you're anything but a bandwagon fan.

You ignore this thread every year until the dying breaths of the season, and only if you think Vancouver is going to win the division. Then you display a profound ignorance of hockey in general which stems from the fact that you only watch hockey if the Canucks are playing and only when it's near the end of the season.

I wouldn't call Calgary overconfident either. There's a supreme difference between overconfidence (see the Red Wings every year) and confidence in the team around you (Calgary) and panic (Vancouver).

Nope-- you forgot the Calgary-- Minny game-- Your conclusion did not necessarily follow from your premise-- It was a likely outcome but the opposite is likely as well.

Your two conditions (the Vancouver and Edmonton records) could be met and Calgary still make the playoffs-- The only way Edmonton surpasses Calgary is if Calgary is 0-4 down the stretch AND Edmonton is 2-0.

--- Nashville loses a 1-0 OT game to Detroit ?? wow-- doesn't clarify anything

Based on recent play, Edmontoin probably deserves a playoff spot over every team in the West except San Jose-- But they actually count the WHOLE season

Record of 3 wins and 1 ties will get you in.

Win against Columbus, Win against Nashville, Win against against Detroit and an OT loss against Detroit.

                                AND

Two losses of Nashville to St. Louis,

                                AND

Three losses by Vancouver and/or edmonton with the other going 1-1 or 1-2.
