The handicap wouldn't be an issue. Hell half my guys can't speak English worth crap. Not being able to hear them wouild probably be an advantage. (assuming the person was qualified and acted like he'd get along with the crew)

But I have had some bad experiences with fundies. I had one guy that was a great worker that got along with everyone then he rediscovered religion. His work performance went down, and he went out of his to try to "convert" all his co-workers. It got so bad that people started avoiding him and team spirit started to fall apart. I'm sure if I saw clues of this type of behavior in an interview, it would negatively impact my feelings about the candidate. I doubt this would be a primary reason, but it would definately impact a close call between candidates.

If I only had the one applicant I would leave the position unfilled until someone suitable came along.

Well you know me here from Poly so it's a bit different. I'm a big believer in keeping work stuff with work stuff, and personal stuff with personal stuff. I don't talk religion or politics with coworkers. If you ask me I'll be happy to talk about it but otherwise no. I just want to go in at work and work, and then go home when the job's done.

How would they even know about the disability from the application?

The application asked for physical and mental disabilities that could affect performance, along with the usual disclaimers, (ie, it won't be taken into consideration), etc.

More likely they saw that you were mentally incompetent. The kind of guy who starts off doing a real degree in university then promptly drops that to go to some no-name small-time rural BC school and get a history degree.

This was while I was still a student at UBC. My friend had a couple years at the community college and neither of us had a degree.

Now, all I put is a degree in History at UNBC. If they ask, I'll tell them about my time in physics at UBC, but it usually doesn't come up. I had one job with the BBC, where the reporter had me doing some data analysis on some of the research for her, and we managed to pitch the story to her boss so she got a featured article.

As far as I'm concerned if I were a manager, it's not my business to know what your sex life is like. I simply don't care. If you choose to make it my business, then you might not like the response.

I'd treat everyone the same. I wouldn't have these 'events' because these same problems always crop up. Just not worth the hassle and frusteration. If I held something it would be employees only and optional, so if you didn't want to go, you could choose not to come.
