The handicap wouldn't be an issue. Hell half my guys can't speak English worth crap. Not being able to hear them wouild probably be an advantage. (assuming the person was qualified and acted like he'd get along with the crew)
But I have had some bad experiences with fundies. I had one guy that was a great worker that got along with everyone then he rediscovered religion. His work performance went down, and he went out of his to try to "convert" all his co-workers. It got so bad that people started avoiding him and team spirit started to fall apart. I'm sure if I saw clues of this type of behavior in an interview, it would negatively impact my feelings about the candidate. I doubt this would be a primary reason, but it would definately impact a close call between candidates.
