They aren't joking. They really do hate, and will act on it if given the opportunity.

Uh-huh. I looked it up, and the Hendrix kid is 24 per some other article. Have you, like, ever been around knuckle-headed young men in your life? This is the kind of thing they do when poorly supervised. This is all obviously intended to be read with heavy irony and consumed only by their group. That it's unspeakably vile is entirely the point, hence all the remarks Politico cites to the effect of "man if somebody finds this chatlog we are so cooked." They don't seriously think the hotel room number happens to be 1488. As they are Republicans, they are used to being called white supremacist etc. in our hyperpartisan era, so they double down on it by being ludicrously, over-the-top racist as a dumb gag in their private chat channel. Because this is the social media era, and everything has to be overdosed on irony. Which is not to deny that some, most or all of them probably are racist (depending how tightly you define 'racist' which can be used to mean a lot of things these days), but this is obviously intended to be edgelord humor.

Another example of this (or a similar phenomenon) emerged at some college a few years back--haven't been able to dig it up because I don't remember the specific college. Some frat or lacrosse team was caught compiling a document about their female counterparts on campus, assessing their appearances and probable sexual tastes. I remember "I call this one 'Gumby' because her smile is mostly gums," and "she's very traditional so I'm going to say her favorite position is missionary." When it inevitably leaked they all got in hot water and there was a brief to-do about rape culture and patriarchy etc. but everybody with sense shrugged and said "college boys being jackasses, news at eleven."

EDIT: Cf. Cards Against Humanity, which is just a gratuitously shocking version of Apples to Apples. Whole point of the game is to be offensive in much the same style as this chatlog. Been around since 2011, fairly popular. Somehow America has survived.

Actually I believe those two events were roughly simultaneous with these chatlogs. Also the jokes aren't especially funny to me but then humor tends to be highly subjective.

Yeah man Israel's the country that just spent 2 years ethnically cleansing Gaza, so political alignment with a fascist authoritarian currently rounding up, detaining, and deporting brown people at random makes sense to me. Jews are (1) not in the same situation they were 80 years ago and (2) not the only people Nazis rounded up and killed. Fascists are still fascists, though.
