Not sure that the a sanctioned Russian economy could maintain control over a contested Ukraine...assuming they could take it and that is a huge assumption at this point. I don't see a path to Russian victory here short of full mobilization and a waning commitment from the West. Russia's strategy now appears to make Ukrainian resistance so costly that they will arrive at the peace table ready to concede land for peace. This might have worked if the Russians hadn't been committing wide scale war crimes on the Ukrainian people. Now that they have shown the cost of occupation to the Ukrainians, then Ukraine is likely to keep fighting as long as the West will keep supplying it...and Russia needs to realize that the West's ability to keep the Arms flowing is greater than Russia's ability to produce it's own Arms.

At this point, the Russian need to save face will only result in the further degradation of the Russian military, economy, and international standing.

...and this nuclear fire plan serves Russia's interests how exactly? How is a post nuclear war world - even if Russia somehow avoids a single nuclear strike anywhere in Russia going to be more livable and manageable for Russia than a world where Ukraine is a genocidal nazi puppet state exterminating ethnic Russians at a terrifying rate of 14k per 10 years (assuming every single death in Donbas has been Ukrainians genociding ethnic Russians of course) and certain states think they are special and go on self appointed world police military actions that don't involve Russia every 5 to 10 years or so?

Russia only liberates those who want to be liberated. Look at Georgia. Russia helped liberate Abkhazia in '93, but waited to liberate South Ossetia.
Crimea wanted to be liberated first, then eastern Ukraine. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland will need to wait their turns!

My question is what happens if there is an outbreak of peace (along any given border line). Who will enforce the peace? What's to stop Russia having another go in a few years?

Seems to my crude analysis any peace deal necessitates Ukraine being admitted to NATO as a deterrent to future Russian aggression. That's not going to be acceptable to Russia. So.... how do reach a peace settlement.

Beat the Russian Army into submission. Sanction them until they pay Ukraine reparations or give ironclad security guarantees. Admit Ukraine into NATO regardless of how they feel. Russia threats are hollow and they have been exposed.
