Meh, if the ukranians actually should be russians, it's probably good that there aren't that many ukranians that may oppose that.

  • Can anyone say that Putin is still completely sane? If so, he is the most evil MF'er since Hitler

Sane ? Well, if the invasion was done back in 2014, it would probably have been a success and Ukraine would have been a Belarus II. Unfortunately, throwing out the russialoving president and the russian invasion of Crimea and Donbas has given the Ukranian army a lot of exercise since then, so it's becoming at bit harder.

Nah... not the most evil MF since Hitler, but he can still get there. Pol Pot comes to mind and he's possibly even more evil than Hitler. Hitler was more efficient, but for pure evil...

              • It would be nice if Germany stopped buying Russian gas now instead of waiting till the end of the year. Maybe turn some of the nuclear plants back on?

                  • I understand there are real limits to how quickly they can switch over to a different power source. "Pay utterly bonkers and unaffordable prices for the energy that runs your whole country, in return for further impairing a megalomaniacal monster who has ignored several rounds of ruinous sanctions already" is not that attractive a proposition.

                    • Elon, what is your take on the whole Patriarch Kirill thing? Is it as simple as a joint land grab for power and money?

                      • Patriarch Kirill is, AFACT, a stooge with the moral authority of a street-corner pimp. He needs to, at a minimum, sell his $30K wristwatch and donate the proceeds to aid for refugees. I am given to understand that the Russian church never really recovered from being sat on (and sometimes staffed) by the Soviets, and the people running Russia today are all ex-Soviet spooks. It's really depressing to reflect that this man is heir to the legacy of 1000 years of Orthodox history, often characterized by stunning bravery in the face of official cruelty. "My, this is a distressing situation, yes, well, let's pray generically for peace and bear in mind that the alternative to all this slaughter is gay pride parades." Bah.

Is the Kirill situation more complex than that? He's another Kremlin toady and presumably has an off-the-books five-story dacha. He just wears a big gold cross and is unfortunately tied up in the apostolic succession, is all.

                        • So, Kirill is basically just another Oligarch. The only difference is that his “company” is a large and historic church.

                          • Sadly ... kinda, yeah. At least, that's my take, not that I'm super-informed about Russia specifically. Superficially, the ROC seems resurgent, but a century of repression will take a toll, and basically the KGB never left power. The Patriarch knows what side his bread is buttered on. Is he totally insincere? Beats me. Odds are that, like Putin, he believes some of his own hype, which in his case means that he really is the last bastion against decadent homosexual hordes. It would be nice if he had some misgivings about all the butchery, but he's stood by Putin through a number of other atrocities; this one's just against an Orthodox country.

Ukraine is about 50/50 Orthodox/Catholic the last time I checked, with the western part of the country leaning heavily Catholic. Oddly, most of the fighting is in the heavily Orthodox areas, which should deepen the split in the Orthodox Church(s).

I just checked Wikipedia and it said Ukraine is over 70% Orthodox and under 10% Catholic.

What Gib said. Also, I think the Catholics are typically Byzantine Rite, which can make them difficult to distinguish from Orthodox in practice. They use our liturgy but pray for the Pope instead of a Patriarch.

I don't understand why there isn't an EU-wide oil embargo way sooner, since the deliveries are less than gas, and I read it's the bigger source of income for Russia. A while ago there was also talk that instead of embargos, the EU should just slap hefty import taxes on Russian energy, which would essentially do the same (rob income), but smarter.

                            Dunno if that is feasible

Use the extra taxes to pay for refugee services.
