the longer you wait the more that die. feel good now not doing anything.

and lets be real. NK would fold in less than 2 minutes... and unable to respond. why wait? do you see some better outcome years from now??

        My concerns are:

We did so well in Iraq and Afghanistan at making things better.

NK has tons of artillery in range of SK population centers.

        Nukes.

        China could get involved.

Actually a problem that grows over time.
At the moment NK possibly doesn't have any "real nukes" available in its stores (just, maybe, "dirty bombs").
          May change in the future.

China, of course, is a big problem ... you wouldn't do anything without their permision

We can't assume they'd be insane enough to use nukes in a first strike. So far they haven't tried anything with the nukes they have. Neither have any other parties in a MAD situation.

We have to assume they would use what they have if we invaded.

NK have been preparing for exactly this scenario for decades. They have thousands of hidden artillery peices within range of Seoul. In the event of a first strike by America (and bear in mind any first strike would be clearly telegraphed by the necessity to move assets into position) NK would unleash their artillery on Seoul, killing tens of thousands of innocent South Korean civilians. The NK army of 1,190,000 soldiers (the 5th largest on earth) and their paramilitary force of 5,889,000 men and women would then engage. Bear in mind NK troops are extremely highly trained and have spent their entire lives being brainwashed into obedience.

It would be absolute carnage, and the death toll would almost certainly end up in the millions when NK's nukes and vast stock of chemical weapons were unleashed.

Even if the leadership collapsed, you'd still have vast numbers of extremely highly trained and fanatical armed fighters trying to do as much damage as they could.

Oh and any first strike on NK would almost certainly provoke China into declaring war on the US. Good job.

Wait 5 years and this person can target half the world.

But why wait, why play his game. The US should just give kim wong dong all the missile tech we got. got to nip this in the bud. it is not easy and not pretty. but it will not get better with time.

or we can wait 5 years.

Probably would be better to go with a carrot than a stick. Or a whole lot of carrots. Maybe try to help them out with such things as feeding their people. Show them we can be friends.

Some decades ago my dad (Phd in horticulture) and many other scientists/experts were slated to go to NK as part of a project to help them modernise various aspects of their economy, but politics put a stop to that shortly before they were scheduled to leave. It's hard to imagine we would be in a worse position than we are now by helping out.

It's obvious that our sanctions on NK, Cuba, Iran, and Russia aren't achieving what we hope they would. Quite the opposite. NK and Iran know nukes are the solution, and have/will get them. Then we're enemies. Almost 60 ****ing years with the Cuba embargo and we've achieved nothing other than to be *******s, make Cubans' lives a bit worse, hamper our own economy, make Florida into one of the states that decides every election, and cut down on our vacation destinations. It's pointless stupidity.

But let's keep making enemies, antagonising them, and then invading to get our soldiers maimed and killed while we create terrorists and drive countries to nukes for protection ...

If anyone is going to preemptively strike it should be SK or Japan, with the US watching their back.

Did we make Venezuelan's lives worse? What a bunch if socialist claptrap. Let the socialists take care if their people. If they can't then their people should fight against them. The US has every right to protect itself and it's allies from hateful damaging ideologies and the nations and people who are spreading their acceptance.

A big problem with NK is, that they actually are still at war with SK.
After all there never has been a formal peace treaty after the korean war ... all that exists is a longstanding ceasefire

                            Yes.

We have also done some things to help Venezuelans ... but we (the US, and also the developed West in general) certainly did things that hurt Venezuelans.

So Aeson, if I were to move in next door to you and your family, I could build a big gun pointed at your house - and you would pay my rent to get me to stop??

So in your analogy NK just moved next to SK? And doesn't already have the guns? And doesn't have any nukes? And instead of "helping" NK we are throwing cash at them? And instead of being protected by China they have no ally?

Also, who are the hundreds of thousands likely to die if I go over to my neighbors house to make them stop?

... other than all the details being wrong it's an analogy I suppose ...
