He wanted to use Orcs as a chiffre for Greeks, but then they'd be called Gorks. Instead he included Gollum. The story how he came to his "precious" and how he lost it again is meant to be a reflection of the Greek financial situation.

              The Greeks are everywhere!

We have 700,000 happy Greeks in Australia. With plenty of pretty greek girls, yiros, wine, ouzo and goat cheese. Do you hear me Bereta_Elder?

Melbourne is the Greek Garden of the Hesperides. A veritable Elysian Fields for Greeks.
