It's petty incidents like this blown massively out of proportion that convinced people that political correctness has gone too far and they need to vote for a racist male chauvinist

Pundits and political analysts point to the white working class (WWC) as the voting bloc that tipped the 2016 Presidential Election in Donald Trump’s favor. Did Trump know something about this group that progressives and members of the Republican establishment were not privy to? No, says Joan C. Williams, but he was able to appeal to their values such as straight talk, masculinity, and economic independence, in a way that experienced politicians didn’t consider. Class politics drove the 2016 election, and it was cluelessness about the needs of the WWC that drove Trump’s victory. If Democrats want to connect with this group, they need to consider how economics, geography, and the WWC’s relationship with the classes adjacent to them—the poor and white collar workers—influence their values. Not doing so poses additional risk in an already unpredictable political climate.

"At a deeper level, both parties need an economic program that can deliver middle-class jobs. Republicans have one: Unleash American business. Democrats? They remain obsessed with cultural issues. I fully understand why transgender bathrooms are important, but I also understand why progressives’ obsession with prioritizing cultural issues infuriates many Americans whose chief concerns are economic.

Back when blue-collar voters used to be solidly Democratic (1930–1970), good jobs were at the core of the progressive agenda. A modern industrial policy would follow Germany’s path. (Want really good scissors? Buy German.) Massive funding is needed for community college programs linked with local businesses to train workers for well-paying new economy jobs. Clinton mentioned this approach, along with 600,000 other policy suggestions. She did not stress it."

Civil Rights are now just cultural issues?

Isn't everything cultural? Thinking it's acceptable for people to be made to work in terrible conditions for poverty wages is cultural.

The incident in the OP was a daft thing done by one person that has been completely blown out of proportion.

I mean that's almost exactly the first thing I said in this thread.

No, but at a time when huge numbers of people are suffering economically, its unrealistic to expect them to prioritize civil rights for very small minorities over their own concerns. The old saying 'All politics is local' is one of the truest things ever said. People will relate everything to their own experiences and make choices they think will improve their own lives above other peoples. We're a selfish species, and expecting altruism in the voting booth is a good way to get your ass handed to you.

So let's continue to promote economic opportunities for white men, while everyone else gets left behind AGAIN?

Let's remember this when white people are the minority and are asking for their rights.

Or we could advance both civil rights and economic opportunity for the poor. They actually have a positive effect on each other.

I'm so sorry that cake bakers can't say no to gays or black people
Sure. But they can say no to a 'Blue lives matter' cake.

Either people have the right to refuse work that they do not want or they do not. Which is it?

Community College is not a massive sinkhole. For-profit and some portion of the mid-ranked non-profit education is the massive sinkhole.
Again, why can't I take a course online at my own pace for a fraction of the cost?

Go ahead and enroll in an online university, just don't expect employers to take them seriously
