  • I think the salient point of the article is this:

Instead, its success in 2008 and 2012 may have had more to do with a uniquely talented politician who also happened to be the first black president.
You could similarly say 2016 may have had more to do with a very disliked and untrusted politician. Instead they ignore that and go full-throttle "Democrats are in ruins!"

Hillary needed about 200k more votes in 3 states and she would have been president. This is someone who was unpopular with her own base, unable to excite almost anyone, under investigation by the FBI with the announcement a week before the election which drove the polling average to striking range at just the right time. The % swings in latino and black votes doesn't matter much. Black vote was down significantly (1.1 million votes) even though population has increased. Ds need a candidate that can enthuse their base, rather than turn them off. Hillary almost surely would have won, perhaps in a landslide, if she had been even a moderately good candidate.

If Rs hang their hat on this election, they're ****ed. Because Trump brings things no other R could, and loses things no other R would. So for Trump is was a strategy that reached close to the expected R vote tally. But for any other R it would have been disastrous. Rs might want to think about ways to reach both Trumps wing, and the previous establishment wing. That may be difficult given Trumps wing is ideologically opposed to the previous establishment. If they can't do that, Rs can reasonably expect to simply go back to business as usual with normal candidates and perform similarly as well as Trump did. They can't reasonably expect to continue to do as well as Trump did without a Trump type character, and maybe not even with a Trump type character once Trump becomes "the establishment". Part of his draw was simply to blow things up.

If Ds abandon their coalition because of this election, they're stupid. Ds might want to think about ways they can bring previously moderate establishment Rs into the fold, or reach out to white union workers. Though they don't have to necessarily. To continue to have a good (and growing) chance of winning the presidency, D's can stick to their coalition and run a less horrid candidate that can bring out the vote.

Now ... Trump's presidency could change things at least on the R side. If Trump finds a way to be a popular president, getting things done with a high approval rating, getting elected to a second term against a decent D candidate ... the R's may have to accept this is their party now.

      • My understanding is that the raw political science models suggested that the generic R candidate would have an advantage over the generic D candidate.

        • We haven't had generic vs generic recently. Bill Clinton was a very good campaigner and won against Bush I (generic) and Dole (generic) handily. Though Ross Perot may have been a big reason for Bill beating Bush I. Bush II was a pretty good campaigner and eeked out a win in close battles against generic Ds like Gore and Kerry. Obama was a great campaigner and won big against McCain (somewhat generic discounting teh Palin) and by a decent margin against Romney (generic).

Hillary was terrible from a personality and corruption standpoint, and couldn't get out of the vote. Trump was a terrible person, but in vote totals was generic.

I think in bland vs bland, the electoral college and demographics favor Ds going forward.

          • I am shocked at you guise.

Sava, a longtime poaster with deep history and roots here at Apolyton, is now gone forevar. All his hopes... all his dreams... are gone.

All his memories, all his debates and unique personality traits... are lost forevar. November 11'th 2016 was the day that a poaster with tens of thousands of poasts has now left the site for good. Sava is GONE, you guise, nevar to return... and not so much as a farewell from you guise. I am speechless. All I can do is poast an A-List video is Sava's honor, in hopes that he reads this and knows that his memory lives on... in me.

            • The Democratic party should let go of Bill Clinton's "third way" ideology and stop nominating bland centrist politicians on the basis that they're more "electable". Bill Clinton succeeded because he was a good politician, not because he was a centrist.

                    • The thing is, Trump's baggage should have been worse. Far worse. His scandals put Hillary's in the shade; he showed every conceivable character flaw; he lied transparently, shamelessly and ridiculously; his signature policy proposal was painfully impractical, and made no sense; his behavior towards minorities was at best patronizing, and his conduct towards women was flat-out revolting . . . but he won. There's really no comparison of the two candidates. A good many Republicans were distancing themselves from the anticipated disaster. But the disaster never came.

I don't think Trump's approach is the future for the GOP, either. It's too narrowly focused (it's not that hard to be Trump; nobody has tried b/c it would have appeared suicidal). There's going to be some realignment, and I think the best bet is to try and peel away religious and/or working-class minorities. Dems have become every bit as much the party of the rich man as the GOP, the sexual revolution is not the churchgoer's friend, and I believe a clever pol could swing it. But that's speculation, and it would depend on chucking much of the poisonous old guard. One way or another, we have to tackle the gross inequality of both wealth and opportunity in this country.

(Hillary's true negative compared to Trump from my POV--insane saber-rattling at Russia--doesn't seem to have come up)

Though it is hard to be Trump. He does have a charisma, and a resume (even if partially faked), and a situation/target, that allow him to act in a way that very, very few people could ever pull off. Even he barely pulled it off (and in the long run may still crash and burn spectacularly), against either the worst or the second worst candidate in modern times.

                        • He won the election by using the right strategy. It looked crazy, but he knew what he was doing. He kept the faith. He could be a popular president like Reagan. People will just start ignoring his offensiveness, like they started ignoring Reagan saying stupid things.

                          • I predict the media will leave him alone now. I don't mean SNL and stuff like that, but they won't make it obvious that they are trying to destroy him anymore because it doesn't work. They are a defeated foe.

                            • Answer: Trump won thanks to the Democrats. So if that was your party, you have them to blame. As a preface, I am writing this from a neutral, objective standpoint. Let’s start with the key factor here. It’s summed up in one slogan: "The silent majority stands with Trump." Remember this quote ...

I don't see how it's possible when the core part of the Democrat agenda is to unravel the traditional family. You've placed yourself fundamentally at odds with large swathes of society. Personally I predict that the Democrats will double down on identity politics, and we've seen our last Democrat nominee who is white and over 50.
