  • ...and you wonder why I hate the government.

Nearly 10,000 California National Guard soldiers have been ordered to repay huge enlistment bonuses a decade after signing up to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan, a newspaper reported Saturday.

This really angers me. Why do the soldiers need to pay for the government's screwup? If it were just a couple I could see where a misunderstanding might go against them, but ten thousand???
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Ten years after? That's a bit absurd.

According to the article there are lots of californian soldiers affected by this.

Perhaps they should get together and defend themselves via some kind of class action in court.

And I agree, this is absurd. Especially since it was not just some kind of sincere mistake on side of the government agency, but rather, the offer of more bonus money was a deliberate action taken by the recruiters in order to attract enough recruits to fulfill their enlistment goals.
Had they offered less money, they would (probably) have gotten less enlistees for Iraqu and Afghanistan, so the amount of money actually resulted in a benefit for the state.
So, what the state does now sounds to me like the state first pocketed the benefit gained by the heights of the enlistment bonus (i.e. the amount of enlistees they got) and now refuses to pay for the costs (or, more exactly, wants back the money that was the reason for getting all those enlistees). Really dishonourable

I signed a petition the other day, I take full credit for fixing this...

Defense Secretary Ash Carter ordered the Pentagon on Wednesday to stop clawing back excessive recruiting bonuses paid to California National Guardsmen.

The people who made this a problem are the ones who ran for office saying how terrible the government is.

What does the state government have to do with a federal issue? This may have been the national guard, but the state government had nothing to do with this. You need to brush up on your civics.

This issue should have been forgiven by the federal government.

Edit: And it appears the federal government has already taken measures to resolve it without demanding repayment.

It's the State government that chose to go after California vets to recoup what they perceive as an 'overpayment'. You're in CA. Why am I having to inform you of your own State Government?

Uh, yeah. This has everything to do with CA, which is why CA is trying to take money from vets, and not TX.

Better go talk to your legislator and express how you're unhappy with how this is being done. Also, welcome to the Republican party.

It is obvious this moron didn't read the article. The Pentagon is the one that wanted repayments. You don't know anything about government nor did you bother reading either of the articles. Your stupid attempt to attack California is void.

You are a piece of ****ing ****. The Republican party hates vets. Talk to them about how many times they slashed VA funding.

The republican party has slashed VA funding multiple times and also removed safeguards to protect veterans from predatory lending. Yeah, they really stand up to vets don't they?

                      Ben is a lying tool.

Then why is it just happening to Californians? And not, say, Texans. Presumably they have national guard units in Texas?

                        During the Clinton Administration?

And no. Not during the Clinton administration. Google "House GOP cut VA funding". Tons of articles the last few years.

You are just ****ing stupid. I don't even know what else to say.

Some of us have longer memories than yesterday.

Clinton cut total military funding from 6 percent to 3.8 percent of the budget.

You don't have memories of anything.

Military funding was cut because the cold war was over, little man.

The US still spends many times its closest allies and adversaries. It isn't even close.

                              You are a selective idiot.

BTW, why welcome me to a party that would be happier to see me locked up in jail for who I am?
