          They pay with it for the niceties of civilization they can enjoy ... for things like firefighters, a justice system, police, an army and many many more things
          Texas has all these things and no income tax.

              Oh and you have a lot of property and sales tax. They are even looking to increase sales tax to make up for the severe shortfall in state revenues. Big parts of your state are headed towards financial insolvency. They are literally running out of money and their credit scores are going down to junk bond status. Bust.
              Don't mind sales taxes if it means I have control as to when I have to pay them. I'm way further ahead than I am with all the withholding. If all I did was invest every penny and held it, I'd retire a millionaire, easy.

                It isn't even enough to cover your broke state. They may have to start implementing more gas tax and toll booths if it keeps up.

                  Why does Ben rag so much about income tax? I'm sure with his income it wouldn't be much. And I'm sure quite a few here pay more in taxes than he probably makes. It figures that only the one that pays so little would complain.
                  It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

                          If you want to live in this country and take advantage of all it offers... you have to pay the taxman.
                          People who were born here and don't like it can leave.

                              d) to get near 50% you will have enough for a very good living even after taxes.
                              e) such a high standard of living is largely possible due to living in an advanced and stable society.

                              I pay over 40% of my income to taxes all considered, and am very grateful that I have been so lucky to be in such a situation. It sure beats the hell out of the time I was paying close to 0 taxes (and a couple of years less than 0). It sure beats the hell out of being born in a poor country and having to work my ass off just to avoid starving, and/or worrying about whether the local warlord is going to swing by for some casual rape of the womenfolk and murder/conscription of the men.
