They had something like 70k people back then and over a million square miles of territory. Now? Texas would be smaller than Poland, but larger than Rumania. They would be the 9th largest state in Europe by population and the second largest area wise, with only Russia being larger. Texas ranks second in receiving federal money. They just could not make up for that if they went independent without going into debt again.
