I have such a friend. The term is really misleading, and doesn't actually mean what it says it means, in that someone born in Philly who is black would be called, "African American", but someone born in South Africa, who immigrated to America would not be considered African American.

I dont really care if people hyphenate their identities, my ancestry is irish and german (and who knows beyond that) and apparently we have a little portuguese but I'm not so sure about that.
