Public Service Announcement: Calling people African-American is racist now.
What would it matter if the term 'African-American' were come to be considered by society, a racist term or not? How is that specific word harmful?
The reason conservatives don't like the term is that it is a crucial part of multiculturalism. That we can subdivide American nationality along racial lines. Now you have a ready made term for every race in America. Conservatives see American as it's own culture and races as a part of American culture and not a wholly separate culture.
IE, there is no "White American culture" per se, but there is American culture with white people, and black people. Black America is a misnomer versus American culture (like Jazz), etc. From my own experience it makes far more sense to just talk about American culture without talking about specific races. Lots of people like basketball for example, and the differences that I've see between different groups is there are very 'American' things about all of them.

I knew a white Kenyan in college who referred to himself as an African American, AFAIK because it amused him to do so
