I would argue that African-American is offensive to Americans who believe that their identity is American first, not whatever the color of their skin. That being said - that Whoopi is asking for this, I find hilarious.

I wouldn't say it was racist per se, because it was coined because it was considered a way to say, "hey we're American too", except without saying that. So there. I wouldn't shed a tear for it's demise. Black is easier and less-pretentious.

Whoopi Goldberg has caused many to raise their eyebrows in curiosity due to comments made during Tuesday’s (January 5) airing of The View.During a discussion on immigration, comedian and co-host Joy Behar joked many would flee the country if Republican frontrunner Donald Trump were elected president. Goldberg didn’t seem to think the comment was funny, and quickly scoffed at the idea.
“You know what uh uh! This is my country,” the Academy-Award winner said. “My mother, my grandmother, my great grand folks, we busted ass to be here. I’m sorry. I’m an American. I’m not an African American, I’m not a chick American, I’m an American!” PS I also think anyone who calls me African American is racist because Kid told me so!
Raven-Symone, who received the ire of the Internet in 2015 for echoing the same sentiments, chimed in before a chorus of claps and whistles came from those in the audience who agreed with Goldberg.
