    • I believe Cruz is naturalized:

Any one born outside the United States, if one parent is an alien and as long as the other parent is a citizen of the U.S. who lived in the U.S. for at least five years (with military and diplomatic service included in this time)

            • His father was born in Cuba, his mother US, I am not sure when his father was naturalized but Cruz is automatically natural born due to his mother either way.

This secondary clause was added so as to grandfather the founders who were born outside of the United States.

It makes no sense to have this clause unless one interprets natural born citizen = born on American soil.

Also we can see that this requirement applies only to the office of the presidency, and not to the Senate or House of Representatives. Reason being that the highest office of the land would have more stringent criteria.
So it says nothing about soil. So you are lying again. And to your students, too.

                    • I also hope you don't teach them 'scholars will believe anything.' That's horrible.
It's a fact, and it's something important to understand. 'Scholars' do in fact teach their opinion as fact. All the time.

Mhmm, if I quote anybody prior to 2005, they are quite blunt as to the correct application. I'm supposed to believe that the constitution has changed because it's inconvenient. I've challenged folks like Kid to show me one opinion posted prior to 2005 that believes what he (and you), believe.

Kid has already shown that he believes that, "the constitution doesn't matter if it gets in the way of electing the best candidate."

I would be pointing out to my students, this is why we have to rely on the constitution first, and not our own desires.

*sigh*. Naturalized!=Natural born. You cannot be a natural born American if you have to be naturalized. Cruz is a naturalized American, due to having to move to the US and take up residency thereof to assert his citizenship.

A natural born citizen cannot lose their citizenship - hence why Cruz still is considered by the Canadian government to be a full Canadian citizen. This is how natural born citizenship works.

You cannot have two 'natural born' nationalities. Because you can't be born in two places at once.

                          • There could be no natural born citizens of the United States before the United States existed.
And that's my point, Aeson. If you could become a natural born citizen through the naturalization process, then this clause would not be needed.

So there had to be a clause to allow someone to be president given that the only natural born citizens of the United States would be newborns
And thank you Aeson. Well done!

                            • I should have quoted more from my link because I think I'm wrong:

Currently, Title 8 of the U.S. Code fills in the gaps left by the Constitution. Section 1401 defines the following as people who are "citizens of the United States at birth:"

Anyone born inside the United States *
Any Indian or Eskimo born in the United States, provided being a citizen of the U.S. does not impair the person's status as a citizen of the tribe
Any one born outside the United States, both of whose parents are citizens of the U.S., as long as one parent has lived in the U.S.
Any one born outside the United States, if one parent is a citizen and lived in the U.S. for at least one year and the other parent is a U.S. national
Any one born in a U.S. possession, if one parent is a citizen and lived in the U.S. for at least one year
Any one found in the U.S. under the age of five, whose parentage cannot be determined, as long as proof of non-citizenship is not provided by age 21
Any one born outside the United States, if one parent is an alien and as long as the other parent is a citizen of the U.S. who lived in the U.S. for at least five years (with military and diplomatic service included in this time)
A final, historical condition: a person born before 5/24/1934 of an alien father and a U.S. citizen mother who has lived in the U.S.

                              * There is an exception in the law — the person must be "subject to the jurisdiction" of the United States. This would exempt the child of a diplomat, for example, from this provision.

Anyone falling into these categories is considered natural-born, and is eligible to run for President or Vice President. These provisions allow the children of military families to be considered natural-born, for example.
so Cruz is eligible to be prez and so is Obama regardless of Kenya or Hawaii
