No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

Key point here, "or a citizen of the United States at the time of the adoption of this constitution." Why is this in here? Because those who were born outside of the United States of America prior to it's founding would be rendered ineligible. This secondary clause was added so as to grandfather the founders who were born outside of the United States.

It makes no sense to have this clause unless one interprets natural born citizen = born on American soil.

Also we can see that this requirement applies only to the office of the presidency, and not to the Senate or House of Representatives. Reason being that the highest office of the land would have more stringent criteria.

There could be no natural born citizens of the United States before the United States existed. So there had to be a clause to allow someone to be president given that the only natural born citizens of the United States would be newborns.
