“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”
― C.S. Lewis, The Abolition of Man

If he thinks about robots instead of girls at age fourteen, he probably had a hard life ahead of him no matter what.

Edit add: As far as bullied kids in school. Those are the ones who will most likely want to get revenge in their own way. I think a fake bomb would be right up their alley.

The police were following up as necessary. What I would like to know is whether there was a legitimate science project? Seems likely not. The police were just trying to determine whether he purposely wanted to create a hoaxed bomb or not? Even fake bombs are essentially the same thing as yelling 'Fire' in a crowded theater and there is not one. You get arrested and interrogated for that too.

Come to think of it, I've probably come closer than most other polytubbies to being in this kid's shoes; in tenth grade, I made a tasteless joke in class which led to my being kept out of school until I got a full psych evaluation to establish that I "did not represent a significant threat to my peers at this time." Not as bad as he got, but my reward for the hassle was smaller too. I got a few days off school, which happened to also earn me a free extension on a research paper I'd put off too long to do on time. He's getting invited to the White House. Well played, young man. Well played.

The occasion is piled high with difficulty…we will be remembered in spite of ourselves… The fiery trial through which we pass, will light us down, in honor or dishonor, to the last generation… We shall nobly save, or meanly lose, the last best hope of earth.
