No, they cannot cuff you because they think you are somehow suspect. They have to (1) have probable cause to believe that a crime had occurred (not true in this case), and (2) the reasonable belief that they need to restrain the suspect to protect themselves, the suspect, or bystanders. Neither of these conditions were true.

Cops can't randomly cuff people for speeding, even when they know the perp was speeding. The cuffs can only be applied under specific circumstances.

When conditions warrant, I am going to criticize the authorities like any normal person. When authority-lovers call me a lunatic for that, I'll wear the label proudly.

I have no problem with people in authority investigating. I have a problem with people abusing their authority. There was never any indication here whatsoever that a crime had been committed. There was an understandable initial misunderstanding, based on the principal's ignorance of what a bomb might look like, but the authorities carried on abusing the child far past the point where that misunderstanding had been cleared up. That is simply unacceptable. The principal is there to protect children, not to abuse or abet the abuse of children.

The principal suspended him for three days and threatened to have him expelled. I think three weeks unpaid administrative leave would be suitable.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.
