    • I'm going to say that LBJ was a liberal in the American context (The Great Society is probably the main argument in favor of that). However, yes... he didn't start the war, nor did he leave it (that Nixon who "cut and run" if anyone did).

Great society, yes, but he's had the greatest longterm impact with the immigration bill. LBJ was extremely liberal and has had far-ranging effects on American democracy.

          • If you take the word liberal, and apply it to anyone you like regardless of what they actually believed and did..
Most liberals extoll him. I tend to take liberals at face value when they decide to welcome someone into their pantheon.

              Oh, I was responding to merely Berz's posts. I can't see Ben's.

if LBJ was a liberal then so are all the centrists and conservatives who support programs started or expanded during his stay in the WH. Medicare, Welfare, SS, voting/civil rights, "the Great Society", ending Jim Crow, if thats how you wanna define liberal then the GOP is full of them. You aint never seen "extremely liberal" in the WH...ever!

                  • One is a liberal or conservative in the context of one's time. Jeb Bush would have been a flaming commie in 1800.

the most I've heard from liberals is support for some his policies and disgust with others, like the war...

Curious, so you don't consider political ideology as objective? What do you make of Oliver Wendell Holmes' support of sterilization of families considered to be alcoholic?
