Here's a "Me" thread, in the long tradition of the Poly Advice Column. Today's question is, is it worth dealing with 2,400 miles of separation with no end in sight?

Lately I've been dating a certain young lady up here in Rochester who unfortunately is from San Jose, California. She's going back there in about 10 days; I'm going to Fairfax, Virginia around the same time. She wants to keep it going. I do too, but I'm uncertain about it.

Moreover, like me, she has a twin sister to whom she is equally attached and, despite not having a job, said twin seems unlikely to leave the Bay Area for the foreseeable future. My firm has an office in Oakland and I'm considering working out of there periodically. That might be prohibitively costly; there's no way I'm getting compensated on the travel expenses.

More than just advice about whether to avoid the situation entirely (though that's welcome), I'd like to know any suggestions about how to make it more manageable if anyone has them.

No, it is not worth it. If somewhere, down the road, you meet up again, give it a shot but life is too short to avoid meaningful local connections because of a flame you really only get to enjoy the idealized version of.

I'm sorry, Aeson. In my book if you assault a cop and try to get his gun you're a thug, white or black, brown or yellow. It's not about the race but about the culture. There's plenty of folks who get this and understand this and are *very* outspoken about how this isn't acceptable behavior. Some of these folks are black.

I just don't see how the Ferguson riots did anything for black people other than destroying their shops and putting many of them out of business. If you're trying to get ahead of the game, the folks pulling you back down ain't helping.

I hope MRT can eventually see this.

Yes, apparently so. I believe that black people can and should be going to school, working hard and getting ahead in life. Not being told that doing this is "acting white" or bullying other black students because they are 'Uncle Toms' etc. Seen it far too many times. It's a real shame.

I'll ask a question, Kentonio, of all the churches I've attended, which one do you think was the most segregated? I've been to churches founded by a Korean Baptist that catered to their community, to a Russian Mennonite community that was the same. I've been to a black congregation here in Texas. I've been to Mexican churches for the Spanish service.

Of these four, all serving their particular communities, which one do you think had the fewest members outside of their community?
