I wouldn't expect you to know that the dispensation of God's wisdom is not dependent on scholars or even the Bible. The Gospel began to be spread well before the Bible was written. And how many scholars were needed? Absolutely zero. One big goose egg.

I wouldn't expect you to know that, but maybe I should have expected Imran to know that.

I'm sure people living in 40 AD could get a good idea what Jesus thought without reading anything written by scholars. Now all you can do is read the gospels, written by scholars.

Ermm.. No. That's not how it works. No one can understand what Jesus said unless they are chosen to understand what He said. The experts in the Law didn't understand Him.

            • I believe what I believe, not what someone tells me to believe. That happens to be everything that Jesus said, as recorded in the Bible. I don't need a scholar to tell me what that means. If I did I wouldn't believe it. I would believe in scholars.

              • Scholars wrote the gospels... who knows what saying attributed to Jesus they could have left out.

They did leave some out. What does that have to do with anything?

The severity and level have to be at least proximate for the parallel to be useful, and we are talking of the present, not the past; this is not 1970, gay clubs are open, and gay is downright trendy. Friggin' Wal-Mart recently pressured Arkansas to retract a RFRA clone; if the situation was ever comparable to Jim Crow, it really isn't now. Furthermore parallels tend to be used to justify equivalent treatment. Restricting freedom of association made sense in the context of the 60s South, where segregation was entrenched. It does not make sense here, where a few holdouts don't want to make gay flower arrangements or counsel gay relationships. That's unreasonable, and I think it's going to bite you in the ass in the long run.

                    • Elok, right now it's reasonable to fine Christians 150k for saying no to baking the cake. This would fall afoul of the 8th, as it's the state of Washington upholding this, which objects to unreasonable fines, as well as the 1st, guaranteeing freedom of speech and expression. Religious beliefs are not exempt from this no matter how much Mr. Fun et al would prefer that only their religious beliefs are upheld.

This is heresy, btw. St. Paul argues quite clearly that the Gospels can be understood by all. This is a crucial tenet of Christian theology.

That's not what the bible teaches. Jesus built a church, with the Apostles, who spread the Gospels.
