So... One suspect supposedly blew himself up in police custody (but no one was hurt other than the guy who was blown up, how lucky) while another suspect says he was tortured into making a false confession just to stop the torture.
He didn't last long did he? We've tortured al-Qaeda types for years and years without any results. Are Chechen Muslims just extra-wimpy or maybe we should just give East Ukraine to the Ruskies if they'll lend us a few Cossacks to unleash on Gitmo, ISIS and whomever.

Honestly, not much more plausible than the actual charlie massacre in the first place.

How about a bloodthirsty Chechen who owes his power to Putin?

No. No it really doesn't. Or haven't you noticed the increasingly long series of Putin opponents who keep winding up getting murdered? Do the Chechen muslims also have a handy supply of Polonium by any chance? Or perhaps a vendetta against the journalists who print anti-Putin stories and then get shot in the elevator of their apartment building?

I'm not saying Putin has this guy killed, because we have no evidence to prove it, but if this guy wasn't the head of state and just a businessman or something, the police would have been kicking his door in about 5 seconds after the bullets hit. Once or twice you could maybe put down to convenient coincidence, but after this many useful deaths it's starting to stretch credibility to breaking point.

I imagine after having your friend blow up it kind of focuses the mind. The terrorists knew the US wasn't really going to kill them where as, it seems, Putin has no problems on that front.

                          • Rumours are swirling in Moscow over the health of Vladimir Putin after the Russian president disappeared from view and put off a foreign visit.

Mr Putin has not been seen in public for a week and an official in Kazakhstan told reporters that he postponed a visit to the central Asian country on Wednesday because he had fallen ill. He will also not appear at an annual meeting of high-ranking officers from the Federal Security Service on Thursday, which he has attended in past years.

Reporters last saw the president when he met Matteo Renzi, the Italian prime minister, on March 5.

Photographs of Mr Putin meeting officials one-on-one have been put on the Kremlin website since then but his gathering with a group of women for International Women’s Day on March 8 actually took place three days earlier, according to one participant.

Dmitry Peskov, the president’s spokesman, moved to scotch speculation about his boss’s health on Thursday, referring to another rumour that Igor Sechin, the powerful head of the state-owned Rosneft oil company, was about to be sacked.

“As soon as the sun comes and it starts to smell of spring, these things flare up,” he said. “Someone imagines Sechin’s resigning, someone the government, and someone doesn’t see the president on the television for a few days.”

Mr Peskov said that Mr Putin was “absolutely” healthy and that he was conducting meetings “constantly, but they are not all public”.

                            • a palace coup?

There has also been an intriguing posting on photo-sharing website Instagram by one of Mr Putin's close allies, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.

In the posting, Mr Kadyrov renews his pledge of loyalty to the president and adds: "I am devoted to him as a person. And this regardless of whether he is in his position or not!"
